I'm driving up from Buena Park solo, in a civic (silver). Will be looking to hitch a ride at the trailhead with someone, or hoping for the mystical shuttle van.

Please tell me your kidding. Sam Merril is not a tough climb. I am out of shape and i climb it with my big biike.

Just my opinion.
Lower Merril is not that tough. Would not like riding up Middle or Upper Merrill. My heavest bike is 33.2lbs. What I was talking about in my post was riding up the fireroad.
