Default La Habra Heights to Turnbull Trail - Does it Exist?

Hello,

Does anyone know how to get to Turnbull Canyon from La Habra Heights? Franko's Map shows a connection via Skyline, but not sure where to pick it up. We explored a few weekends ago and started from Old Fullerton Road. The trailhead was right there with an immediate long climb (may have been called Powder). We ended up at Schabarum Park then found our way back. Not sure if we were on Skyline since the trails weren't marked. We plan to try this Saturday morning but not sure where to start.

Thanks,

Teri

There is a Turkey Ride on Thanksgiving morning that does the route but starting from Turnbull. I did it 2 years ago, we rode from Turnbull to Schabarum (sp?) park (which connects to Powder Canyon off Fullerton Road) and back. So it does exist. It's like the Loop where you have to know what street to cross to get back on the trail. If anyone has info I'd like it too. I was thinking of doing the Turkey route again this year.

Our Scout troop used to do the hike as a backpack training hike. It's been years.

Lety - is the Tgiving ride something formal? Or just show and ride?

Thanks! We were hoping to catch it from LHH. Maybe we'll start where we did last time and turn the opposite direction after the hill. I do have a book showing the ride in the direction you explained Letty, but it looks rather confusing.

If you start at Powder Cyn, make at left at four corners and climb up the hill to the water tower instead of going straight to the horse stables. At the top you will connect with Skyline. Continue left and it will take you towards Colima and eventually to Turnbull. The other way takes you back down to Schabarum Park. For a nice loop, go past the stables and there is a ST on your left with switchbacks up and eventually back to Fullerton Rd. I haven't done this loop in years for being somewhat of a local ride.

Thanks. Last ride we did pass the stables on the way back and took the ST on the left. I really liked it. We ended up on Fullerton Rd right near the car. Looking forward to trying out Skyline. I know exactly where to turn left (at the top of the hill). We tuned right last time and ended up at Schabarum.

I was riding with a group that knew the route. But there were tons of people out doing the same thing that day. I'm thinking if I show up early enough we might find someone to follow. I've lost contact with the people I rode it with last time. I want to do this ride since my parents live in Whittier, I can get a long ride in, go to the parents, shower and bam it's turkey time! I think we started the ride at 7 AM.

Thanks for the info and the photos. We plan on giving it a try tomorrow. We will most likely start off of Old Fullerton road and do the immediate climb just because I know where to go fom there.

Can someone describe the Powder Canyon trail? It's close to my parents house and I'd like to explore out there, but I want to hear more about it first.

Is it fun? Lots of climbing? ST? Easy to navigate?

Thanks!

I received this from the Jenson Newsletter.
Ride if for this Sat. at Powder. It's mainly fireroads and some small single tracks. The switchbacks are fun and fast.

Alan Eger returns! MTB ride Saturday, January 12 - Powder Canyon
It’s been 4 months. We’ve missed him and we know you have too. Alan Eger is back and kicking off the winter ride season at Powder Canyon. This is a great, little known riding area right here in our neighborhood. Singletrack, climbing and fast swoops that give you everything you can take.
  • Ride starts at 8AM
  • Come on a trail-ready bike in good operating conditions
  • Be self-sufficient with helmet and your own tools, nutrition, water
  • Rain cancels
Directions:
From Los Angeles, take the 10 Freeway east, and then the Pomona Freeway (60) east. Exit at Fullerton Road. Turn right onto Old Fullerton Road. The park is located at 2485 Old Fullerton Road. Look for the RIDE signs and enter the park road.
From Orange County, take the 57 Freeway north and exit at Pathfinder Road, turn left (west). On Fullerton Road turn left (south). Turn right on Old Fullerton Road. The park is located at 2485 Old Fullerton Road.

I live just on the other side of the hills and usually ride here a couple times a week. Powder Canyon, in itself, is rather uneventful, but there are fun variations in the area.

The Otterbein route, between Schabarum and the radio tower is the highlight. I think it's best done in the downhill. Real hammerdogs will scoff and tell you that the trail is properly done in the up direction. The switchbacks on the east side of the canyon, between Schabarum and Fullerton Rd. are also fun.

From the radio tower, if you point your front wheel west, you can go as far as Hacienda before you hit asphalt. Keep it pointed that way, and you can make it to Rose Hills, although I've only gone as far as Colima.

If you're looking for a tour guide, let me know.

Thanks for the info. I've only done this once and ended up making it over to Schabarum park. We went up Powder, then hung a right at the gate and ended up at the park. We came back through the horse corrals and took the switchback trail and ended up back at Old Fullerton road. We've been wanting to try the route that is suppose to take you all the way to Turnbull. How do you think this trail will be this weekend after all the rain?

We used to start at Schabarum then followed something like Fully Loop, but with a lot more climbing. It really was a fun time. It would take a while but we would end up at Turnbull and do a loop there before heading back. In those days it was an all day adventure.

I remember riding along side a street next to a chain linked fence, then popping out to cross a street (Colima?) then riding down it a ways finding the trailhead again followed by a somewhat steep climb and doing a lot of ups and downs all the way there. A real workout.

If you'd like I'll try and get some good directions for you.

Yes, I would love directions. May do this ride if CHSP is still closed on Saturday.

If you go to Google Maps, you can switch over to satellite view and plot yourself a route. It looks pretty easy to get from Fullerton Rd. over to Turnbull.

I called the rangers yesterday and they said the that CHSP may be closed through next week. The park is so wet they can't get in with their trucks to inspect it yet!

Feel free to call them yourself if you want trail conditions, 951-780-6222. They are very nice people and very willing to answer any and all questions.

Sadly, some equestrians and MTBers have been going around or over the gate from the Chino Hills side and damaging the trails. It could be very bad in there.
