VQ/CC Training ride Holy Jim to Trabuco and Back
Calendar: Rides & Things

With Thanksgiving next week and the Sladnas/firestorm newbie ride the following weekend, I thought I'd squeeze in another training ride before then. Here is the route, park at Live Oak/Trabuco wash area(VQ/CC finish line). Ride in, climb Lower HJ to Main Divide, then over to Trabuco and descend, swing up and climb, hike, ride, crawl up West Horse Thief and back over toward Holy Jim. We can ride up to Upper now that it's open and come down that before coming down Lower HJ.

There are some bailout points. You do not have to go up WHT or if you do then you do not have to do Upper HJ. You can even do just the first climb up Lower HJ and then head back down. Even that would be hard for beginners. Those that do will put in over 40 miles and about 9000 ft of gain. How's that for a training ride? Hope you can join me.

Meet at the wash area on Trabuco/Live Oak at 7:30am
Ride time: 8:00am

Choices, sure..,

Ride #1- Holy Jim out and back(approx 19 miles)
Ride #2-Holy Jim to Trabuco(Toad Course-27 miles)
Ride #3- Same as #2 but going up WHT then back to Holy Jim and down.
Ride #4- Full Tour, Ride #3 plus up to upper HJ then down LHJ

At some point during the ride, you'll have to let me know which ride or bailout you're doing so I know where you are. I don't want to leave anyone behind. You don't have to decide now, just let someone know you are taking one of the bailouts so they can let me know.

Bring extra tubes, something to eat/snack, and plenty of water, this ride could take up to 6 hours (I hope not).

Sorry, this is not a newbie or beginner/intermediate ride. This is a training ride for intermediate/advance riders. Know your limits. There is alot of distance that has to be covered, this is to insure that it does not hold up the group too long. Thanks.

Gene...I'm now convinced that you are doping with this as a 'TRAINING' ride

I'm hoping something else opens up in The Santa Ana's, like Harding and Motorway, if not, I probably will post a Loop around LCWP and El Moro. I work sunday night so it won't be an all day event, but will still work ya.

Just think Kevin, when the real VQ/CC or Traverse comes, it'll be a walk in the park.

Edit; start time moved up 30 min.

Do you plan on going up WHT at the split with Trabuco or going down Trabuco (to the gate) and then turning around - retracing what you just descended?

Without UHJ (small detour) the route looks to be 35 miles.

We will be going up at the split. Don't know the miles, but up WHT, then back over to the top of Upper HJ on the Main Divide, down Upper HJ and then down Lower HJ, back out to the road seems like alot more than we did Mon and that was 27 miles, but I could be wrong. I changed the estimated miles to "over" 40.

The elevation gain is also an estimate. Geoladders has the Holy Jim to Trabuco at 4,240 ft add Trabuco up WHT which is 3,420 minus the climb frome the HJ parking lot up to Upper HJ, I would guess close to 9000 ft. Again, I could be way off. Anybody know?

Where is this wash at Trabuco/Live oak? Is it the intersection of Trabuco creek road and Trabuco canyon road?
I don't have a vehicle that can make it up Trabuco creek road.

After turning onto Live Oak from Santiago, where is Trabuco? Is it up that one dirt road that goes for a couple miles up to HJ trailhead? I can't remember, it's been a while...

Trabuco and Live Oak are one in the same. Live Oak becomes Trabuco as you pass O'neill Park main entrance. After passing the water tank and small bridge crossing, you'll see open dirt lot on your left. That's where we'll stage.

Can't drive HJ, it's single track with lots of stream crossings.
