Hey gang, just wanted to get this out there for those interested in partcipating in a great event.
It's the 2nd annual 50 Mile Ride For Project Rwanda The ride consist of 2 rides, This is the revised route: The 50 mile route will start at Cooks, enter the back side of O'Neill, proceed through and out of the park near the RSM lake, proceed to the Dove Canyon waterfall, ride the ridge trails all the way to Caspers. We’ll drop down Star Rise, do kind of a loop that includes Bell Canyon, Oso, Cougar, and East Ridge, at the end of East Ridge we arrive at a parking lot and rest rooms that will be our outermost checkpoint and refueling/aid station. From there we proceed back on Bell Canyon, Sun Rise, Cougar, Oso, Bell Canyon again and climb back out on Star Rise, tracing our route all the way back to the waterfall at Dove Canyon (an aid station will be there as well). From the Dove waterfall, we head back out to what was basically last year's "second leg", We will pass the Coto main gate, climb and traverse Chiquita Ridge, head down Tijeras Creek trail to Arroyo Trabuco Trail, turn back to O'Neill, through the park and back to Cooks Corner for the full 50 miles. I'll be on for this one too - last year was great (though damn cold at 6am on the 30th of December, something like 27 degrees!), and made a great into longer, harder rides.
Plus it'll be just one more tune-up/training ride, and besides what better way to cap off the year than with a big ride? Be fun to know some faces out there this year too...

Is the forest going to be open by then?
Newsroom - Temporary Emergency Closure Extended Cleveland National Forest News Release USDA Forest Service Cleveland National Forest Contact: Anabele Cornejo, Assistant Public Affairs Officer 858-674-2985 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE San Diego, CA - November 1, 2007...To protect public health and safety, the Cleveland National Forest (Cleveland NF) has extended the closure of National Forest Service lands and recreation facilities. The closure, which went into effect October 22, will continue through the end of the fire emergency. The use of Cleveland NF recreation facilities, lands, roads, or trails is prohibited. Violators are subject to fines and/or imprisonment. For additional information, visit www.fs.fed.us/r5/cleveland. "Hotspots still exist in the fire areas and moderate santa ana winds are forecasted for this weekend. Those two ingredients could potentially cause more problems for us. We will re-evaluate the Cleveland NF closure need next week," said Will Metz, Forest Supervisor for the Cleveland National Forest. Four fires have burned on the Cleveland NF. Currently, the Harris Fire has burned 4,481 acres, the Poomacha Fire has burned 5,574 acres, the Santiago Fire has burned 6,617 acres, and the Witch Fire has burned 44,150 acres, for a total of 60,822 burned acres of National Forest System land. While the closure is in effect, two Burned Area Emergency Response teams will be evaluating fire damage. Final reports will be available within two weeks of containment of the fires. Individuals or organizations holding special use permits for sanctioned activities within the Cleveland NF should contact their local ranger district office for access information. Most county roads and state highways will remain open to through traffic. Please check with CALTRANS for up to date road information. Forest offices are open Monday - Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cleveland NF Supervisor’s Office call (85 673-6180. I volunteered last year and rode the second loop. They are looking for even more volunteers this year. Here is the info:
In 5 weeks my friends and I will be hosting over 500 mountain bikers in an effort to raise $50,000 for the non-profit ProjectRwanda.org (http://www.projectrwanda.org) existing to support micro enterprise coffee businesses in Rwanda. Last year our ride raised $32,000 with over 250 riders, we are looking to double that this year. This event is entirely volunteer led and we could use your help to pull it off. Plus you'll get a free event t-shirt ![]() Ride details: http://www.50mileride.com 50 Mile Mountain Bike Ride December 29, 2007 Cook's Corner, Trabuco Canyon, CA Volunteer: Last year we had 30 volunteers and we need to double that to be successful. Volunteers where the highlight of the race and riders bragged about the support they gave on course. -- Ask your youth groups/small groups – We can give community service hours -- Bring your family out for the day. We will put you all to work! -- Come solo and work for half the ride or the entire thing. -- Get your co-workers involved. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering please ask them to email me (andy@outsideallday.com) for more information. I am beginning to make the master volunteer list now. Donate: We greatly benefit from all donations, from small to large. 99% of the proceeds go directly to Project Rwanda. -- Bring them the day of the ride (cash or check) -- Donate online using your credit card before the race (http://www.active.com/donate/50mileride2007) Supplies: Bulk bottled waters, bulk sports bars, bulk fresh fruit, etc. Let me know if you have anything. Tell your friends: Please help to spread the word to your neighbors and potential sponsors in your community. We have people flying in from all of the country to be a part of the ride.
