Default OC Park Closures

Park Closures (Posted from http://www.ocparks.com/newsroom/defa...1540&subshow=A)

Hazardous Conditions Due to Santa Ana Winds

by Marlene Brajdic, Special Services Manager on 10/22/2007

Several parks are closed due to the severe Santa Ana Winds that have caused damage to mature trees and made conditions within the parks hazardous. Parks that have been temporarily closed are Aliso and Wood Canyons, Carbon Canyon, Irvine, Mile Square, Peters Canyon, Santiago Oaks, Limestone/Whiting Ranch, and Yorba Regional Parks. Notice of when the parks are open again will be posted on this page, the OC Parks home page. Thank you for your patience and cooperation during these park closures.

The Public is asked to cooperate with the County of Orange in staying out of open space areas and off the trails during the extreme fire hazard conditions and even after the immediate danger is controlled. Firefighters, park rangers and other resource agencies need the public to comply with the park and trail closures until such time as it is both safe for the public and not harmful to the environment. With the present danger due to high winds and the potential for fires to flare up, the wilderness parks, in particular, and some of the regional parks have been closed for public safety. This includes trails within these parks. OC Parks will have a large job ahead to clear trails and facilities of fallen trees and debris created by the high winds. Even after the fires have ended, the burned areas are very fragile and an assessment will be made regarding when these might open to the public again. This website will be updated to advise visitors as to when the parks will reopen. It is important for the public to be safe, to keep out of the way of fire-fighting operations and to respect nature's healing process. Thanks for your cooperation.

Information regarding the local fires may be found on the Orange County Fire Authority website www.ocfa.org.

It's going to be downright nasty through Wednesday. If anyone is going to poach please bring some loppers and/or folding saw with you. Not everyone thinks obstacles are fun.

I was driving around at lunch and saw one homeboy running in Irvine!! You might as well be sucking on a tail pipe out there today. I can smell and taste the smoke inside my office.

Limestone Canyon fire

From: Kimberlee Staff
Mon Oct 22 16:25:33 2007

Hi Everyone-

I just got off the phone with the Irvine Land Conservancy who manages Limestone Canyon for the Irvine Company. IRC said Limestone is pretty much a complete loss as far as fire damage. There may be some pockets remaining inside, but until all the fire is out, they will not know for sure. The fire has also spread into some areas of Whiting – as much as 1/3 is what they estimate right now. As you may or may not know, Limestone and Whiting back right up next to each other. The fire was started by some psycho arsonist.

The fire started up by the spur gate area around where Santiago and Silverado meet and went up Hicks Haul Road. It eventually jumped the 241 and then spread south consuming all of Limestone as it burned. All future activities in Limestone for the next two or three months have been put on hold until the damage can be assessed. New vegetation may need to be planted, i.e. seedlings and seeds to assist in regrowth.
We can only hope the animals found safer places to be with all this. Cameras will be set up again as soon as possible to monitor activity. There were at least four active mountain lions in the area, including one mother with two cubs.

Please check with the rangers at Whiting on when the park will open again and do not ride in there until the park is open and ready for us. If it ends up getting burned anywhere near like Santiago Oaks did a few months back, it could be quite a while before it is open to the public again.

Thanks,
Kimberlee Staff
