Default San Juan / Trabuco / W.Horse Thief

Chris Matt and I started climbing at 7:15 or so. On the way up to Cocktail rock we were having mechanical issues with Chris’s rig and had to stop twice to fiddle with his rear drl. Determined that the drl hanger was bent and gently bent it back.

At Cocktail Rock Chris noticed that his front tire was going flat. We just started laughing because we knew we still had a long ride ahead of us. Matt asked me “how many miles have we pedaled so far?” I told him “6……….and only 26 more to go”. He thought I was joking. Chris said he is not joking. Matt said thanks but no thanks and headed down the hill.

Well Chris had somehow managed to slice the sidewall of his tubeless tire. He then put a tube in it and a Gu wrapper around the tube to protect it from the tear.

Off we went. We were almost to Blue Jay when Chris informed me that his tire was going flat again what th'a $%@#%@#!!!!!. He runs slime in his tubeless system and guess the Gu wrapper moved and pinched the tube.

We got to a water source (near bathroom) cleaned the area in the tire, patched the slice with my thick tube patches and also put a patch on the outside. Worked perfect.

We had no more patches or 26” tubes so I asked him do you want to head back? He said “heck no lets roll”. We rode through Blue Jay campground and hit the road up to the Main Divide. The wind was blowing down below but was freaking howling on the M.D. At times the wind would stop you dead in your tracks. We made it to the top of Trabuco / Los Pinos and took a quick break.

Headed down Trabuco for our first DH of the day! This trail is a blast. Stopped at the intersection of Trabuco / W. Horse Thief and headed up W.H.T. This is 1.5 miles of hike-a-bike and is punishing.

At the top we knew we had some DH so we continued on no-stop until we got to the intersection of Trabuco / Los Pinos. By this time the wind was blowing crazy hard. Thank goodness we were heading DH. Rolled up to where we patched the tire……ate some food / hydrated and motored down until we hit the up-hill leading back-up to Cocktail Rock. At this point our legs were gone and walked quite a bit.

Got to Cocktail Rock and kept rolling………..WE HAVE BEER BACK AT THE CAR!!!

At the car cracked-open a cold one…AHHHHHH!!!!

Total miles was 32 and change. This is a good training ride for those doing the VQ /CC and have no desire (like me) to do all of your training on fire roads.

very cool ride. as I've never done SJT to Trabuco, I have a question: which way is a more punishing climb?

just curious- I've always wanted to to SJT to Trabuco (or vice versa)

no- shuttle as in "car stage". I've done san juan up to Bluejay, but never took MD from there- I'm basically curousl what main divide is like between bluejay and trabuco as I've never done that

(now, why didnt I ask this question in the 1st place? doh!)

ah- worse than the first climb from beeks up main divide?

I've looked down towards SJT from the top of Trabuco, but that 1st mile or so (that's visible) doesnt look too terrible.
