Default Noble Canyon 10/21/07

This was my first time doing the full Tour de Noble and I can easily say it's now one of my favorite rides.

It was nice meeting some new people and seeing others that I havn't ridden with for a while. I believe our group was 17 riders. I was initially concerned that a group this big would mean we'd be finishing in the dark. That wasn't the case even with a few mechanicals and flats.

I didn't take many pics since I knew the STR trail papparazzi Allison would shoot a couple hundred for the benefit of a RR. Thanks, girl.

A few pics from the pavement climb after Extra Credit:

Ben taking a turbo boost hit:

SDYeti

Justin sporting his full Lycra-Boy costme in advance of Halloween - shaved legs and all

Roger waiting for his tow

Nancy and Allison throwing modified shockers

Ben and I helped this baby rattler off the Indian Creek trail

BLT - A meadow waiting for the rainy season

Before making the final descent down Noble, we met quite the group of characters. To the ladies delight, a shirtless Technoviking's dad. Then Heckler Mark and the man himself Dave Turner. Dave was very cool to talk to. Engaging and down to earth. I know a few had some issues with him at the Fontucky demo but I guess he must have had a bad day then. This day he was gladly offering up tubes and helping to change flats on Dan's Yeti.

On a side note He was riding one of the new RFX's with an air shock. I was a skeptic of this new design until I saw it in action - following behind Dave, I was amazed at how compliant it was over rocks without blowing through the travel. I want to try one for myself now.

In conclusion, I had a great time and the burrito at Manana's was well earned. I am bummed that I missed the STR birthday bash though. I planned to hit Danny K's but by the time I got home at 8:30 I was toast. A quick shower and I was in bed.

Default It's a beautiful day

Don't let it get away

You're on the road

But you've got no destination

You're in the mud
In the maze of her imagination

You love this town

Even if that doesn't ring true

You've been all over

And it's been all over you

It's a beautiful day

Don't let it get away

It's a beautiful day

See the world in green and blue

See China right in front of you

See the canyons broken by cloud

See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out

See the Bedouin fires at night

See the oil fields at first light

And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth

After the flood all the colors came out

It was a beautiful day

Don't let it get away

Beautiful day

Thanks for the RR. I need to go on one of these. I could almost hear Dave "The Edge" Evans wah-wah-ing over the photos.

BTW,
it's just a gopher snake....

Thanks again Allison+Justin for a great ride. Another great group (didn't expect anything less). I can't say I had my best personal ride--but if anything, I come out of this knowing a bit more about my body and what type of nutritionals do and don't work for me. Until next time...

Bit of a different RR for me, but once we got to riding the chorus of that song kept coming back to me...

I actually stopped at one point on BLT before Middle Earth and just kind of stood there looking around, enjoying the wind and the blue sky.

It was COLD when we pulled up. Just down the freeway from Pine Valley the temp was around 53. I thought it'd be perfect. As soon as we turned onto Highway 80 the mirror was screaming ICE and showing the temp as 35.

I didn't want to get out of the car, but finally did. It was just plain cold. Clear.

Wally came over from the outhouse and was saying that a CAT was down there. Seriously.

It was pretty messed up, but obviously someone had tossed two kittens down in the outhouses.

Luckily Kevin had a soft spot for kitties, so he sacrificed his towel and pulled them up. Ew. But, they disappeared pretty quickly once both freed. It was pretty sad seeing them down there, though. So, we all cheered.

We got started right before 8. I knew, despite the fact that my fingers were totally frozen and would hardly move that I'd be really warm soon.

Once out of the rocks and about .75mi from the top of Whore I stopped at a crossing with Ben and Wally to remove my knee warmers (I hadn't put anything else warm on). They were removing layers, and Nancy and Roger stopped to do the same. By the time we made the left and were climbing up the last bit of DG before the top of Whore it was probably 68 or so. Felt like it, anyway.

The road climb was as it normally is... No injuries or bike mechanicals at the closed gate.. and we made it to Indian Creek with no issues. We picked up Eric, the only other SSer to keep Wally company all day. Climbing up Indian Creek was fine.

My tire started spewing air about 1/4 mile from Champagne Pass. Darrell offered to change the tube out, but I figured I'd make it up to where Justin was. I thought it was tubeless, but I guess I had knocked a knob loose, so the tube started to come out and just got sliced. No biggie. Ben offered a tire boot, and with a new tube I was set. Where were all the Nevegal haters?!

I flew down Pinball. It is just SO much fun. I always love that section. It'd be worth re-riding, but really would be too much effort to climb back up! One guy was climbing up... he was, like, "Did I miss the memo?" I said, "Yeah, you are going the wrong way!"

The climb up Noble's SS was tough, as usual, but gorgeous. I looked to the right at one point and there was a little meadow down in the valley with some beautiful fall colors. They were abounding at 5000ft. At least, as much as they can in southern California.

We made it to Penny Pines in 4 hours, which I think is probably record time for a big group. We all decided to go and do the extra credit to climb Middle Earth and descend.

Only CraigEpic and Darrell/Jonathan decided to hit the tree jump. I want to do it at some point.

I was really hurting on the ME climb. I took Sport Legs and Endurolytes.. ate at BMX. I still felt pretty horrible on the climbs, but luckily I knew there was some fun descending coming my way.

I hit the tree jump. Had to stop right before it since a few people were walking around, so didn't quite get the air I think I did last time. Still fun. I hit Widowmaker (also not JRA).

I did the switchback at the top of Stairway to Hell, and ALMOST made the turn... there was a rock in the way that kind of stopped my progress. NEXT time, that turn is mine.

Stairway was without incident. I wasn't looking forward to the climb out, or Whore, but did them both.

Since we'd picked up Mark and DT at the top of BMX I said I had missed my Roman Wall guide the last time we'd been out. He waited for me at the top of Extra Credit and led the way down the last part of the trail. With only him in front me I FLEW. Couldn't quite keep up with him parts, but man was it fun. I was on the edge of bonking, exhausted, but let it all hang out. He's got some killer lines and hits down that part. It was great.

Thanks to all who made it out! It was a beautiful day.

Awesome RR's!!

I must say they were/are painful to look at for me. Looks like you guys had a blast. I wish I could've made it.

After getting sick on the way down, I went home and went back to sleep. When I woke up and and got some food in my gut, I felt a lot better. My dad, my son and I decided to ride here in Fallbrook in the early afternoon.

Being that my 575 is broken, I decided my 42 pound Haro with gears would do better here than a SS, so out we went. 8.26 miles and 1,200'+ of climbing later I was worked. It's nice to know I can do that ride on a big bike though.

This morning, BJammin and I did a 20 mile road ride--my first road ride--yes Ben popped my cherry. It was fun and I felt strong the whole time. I know it was only 20 miles and flat, but we pushed a good pace. When we were done I hustled back to Fallbrook and made it to church on time.

I didn't get all the riding in I wanted, so after church I left my car in the parking lot and rode 4-5 miles into town to meet a group of friends at our usual Sunday lunch spot, then rode 4-5 miles home afterwards (I just got back). So, it was nice getting in another 9-10 miles.

Anyhoot, didn't mean to thread hijack here

I don't know if I'll be able to get up to Noble again before it's too late. I sure hope so. One of these days I'm going to have a Noble ride that turns out good.

So far out of the 4 Noble rides I have been on/planning to go on, only the first one went as planned. Here's hoping number 5 (whenever it happens) works out.

What were the totals for this Tour de Noble? Mileage? Ascent? Hours? Just curious what I have to look forward to. All of these pics make me want to do that ride someday.
