Default RR: National take your kid MTB Day

First a few thanks.

Thanks to all the parents and kids that showed today to ride and/or join in for some post ride fun (and the food/drink donations)

Thanks to all the young guns who made it fun to ride like a kid again

Thanks to my wife who rode with me the first time in who knows how long

Thanks to my son who is my best friend and endured dirt in his face hanging in his trailer for longer than he wanted today

Finally, thanks to all the shops (Adrenaline, The Path, Switchback, REI- Santa Ana, and JensonUSA) for their very generous donations of swag for the kids

Okay here goes…

Rollup to Irvine and start kitting up, say hi to old friends and meet a bunch of new faces.

Based on "skill" we broke into three groups.

Big bikes hit oaks, everyone else headed to Peters Canyon. We again broke into two groups with some taking on the loop and others pulling trailers and riding with younger kids hitting the fire road. Cannot speak for other groups which probably had better trail leaders than I bit I took our group on small unexpected "extra-credit "climb" only to be turned around by a locked gate (sorry folks). I believe Darin (Maxwell) and John (keep what happens) led the other groups, so thanks there as well

While our groups ride was a bit tame, it was great meeting and riding with new faces and riding along side the next gen of riders and dare I say STRer’ers

Amazingly after our respective rides we all seem to arrive back at Irvine on time in one piece and big smiles on all faces.

Hope others can share their ride stories (all groups) and pics as I seemed to get lost in the fun and never took my camera out of camelback

Once back at Irvine, some have to bust out with other commitments but the others start unpacking the trucks/cars to get BBQ going and soon after the fun (i.e. craziness) began.

Again a kink in my armor is revealed with total carnage during the kids raffle. While not the smoothest process (ever hear the phrase trying to heard cats?), it did seem that all the kids had fun and hopefully went home with some cool stuff. Yes, I will say I was beyond "embarrassment" when the first ticket picked belonged to my son. I promise no fix was in and you’ll have to speak to Craig’s son who was the actual ticket picker.

Also wanted to give a big shout out to Noel's son who came and rode while a bit under the weather and who won the ad hoc mad spin "slowoff" event. (Hopefully a vid will follow). this huy is like the energizer bunny and does not stop. He was still ripping it up after evertone headed out

Anyway, after full bellies and prizes galore, as planned we started to roll up the sidewalk a bit after 1pm and say our good-byes.

So, again many huge thanks to all, particularly the kids who put big smiles on our faces today and spent what I hope was a fun filled morning with their parents riding like a kid!

Thanks so much for putting this together. As I said before, Ashlie and I don't get to ride together much (she has a very busy schedule), so this was a great excuse for making her climb on and ride with me--or, ahead of me, as she did for most of the ride.

Ashlie went up the little "extra credit" without even stopping to consider the single track off to the side. I caught up to her and asked if she was sure she wanted to go up; she looked like a girl possessed and just looked over at me before spinning a bit faster to reach the top first.

We did the short distance flat ride, but I told her that the next time she's going to have to advance a bit. I don't think she was out of breath at all on that ride and I'm convinced that the only sore legs she has were from her cross country running.

I hope we can do this again!!!

I can't start without saying a huge thanks to Kid A for the tremendous job he did putting this together. He took the bull by the horns when no one else stepped forward and went beyond the call of duty by lining up a ton of swag for the kids, tons of fixins to eat, scouting out the location and rides. All we had to do was show up with the kids and ride. Thanks also to everyone else that food, drinks, desserts, etc. No one left hungry I'm sure.

I invited my friend Fred and his son along and we instituted a no whining policy on the ride. Thankfully both our boys complied pretty well.

I was only able to bring my youngest son, Brian. He's really doing well riding. He's constantly standing and hammering. Always giving every hill 100% and surprising me with how far he makes it up some steep stuff. The last couple rides he's also improved his downhill riding. He's almost completely conquered his fear of it and has learned to keep his weight back and modulate his brakes. Can you tell I'm proud of him?

On with the pics:

#1: Rolling down the bike path towards Peters Canyon
#2: Daddy lends a helping hand
#3: Some of the group going down
#4: Keeps What Happens putting on a climbing clinic
#5: On trail back

Unfortunately, I forgot to get my camera out of my Camelbak once back at the picnic site so I'll leave the festivities to your imagination.

Many kuddos to Kid A for all the organizing, donation gathering, etc, and to everyone who came out and made this ride happen. It was not only my son and wife's first STR ride, but my official first as well, and we had a great time. Pleasure to meet all the like minded folks and looking forward to the next STR ride.

Thank you Adam for planning, fund raising, and organizing the National Kid MTB Day. I would say it was a major success. I wish I would of took a picture of Sean on the way home. He was out like a light and dreaming about the peacocks and woodpeckers.

A big thanks to Adrenaline, Jensen, the Path, Switchback, and REI for donating swag.

Thanks Crash for watching the kid while I took pictures.

Traci, we missed you cuz we were the only ones that didnt go on the big kids ride and would of welcomed your company of little ones on the ride around the lake. Hope Mattie is doing better.

Since Craig took care of the pics on the dirt I will add what I had.

The Group.

Default Way to go Adam!

Sorry we couldn't make the ride today. Looks like a total success!!
Kid-A, Way to go!!! Sounds like you pulled off a 'doosie' of an event that was felt by all! What a great way to get the young blood flowin'.
I did get a 'Kid" out on the trail today..Fat Possum (Dillon) Did a ride thru LCWP/CCSP/IRC/Nix Nature Center=15mi total. I don't know if it was the IMBA thing today or what, but I do believe this is the VERY first time he didn't (ever once, in 5 yrs, not a peep, except to say "Hell Yeah!!) complain. Parents....you know what I mean.
Anyways, nice job Kid-A!!

First of all, thanks again Adam for arranging this. I think we all had a good bonding experience. It was nice to meet some new riders although I didn't get around to meeting everyone.

CalEpic and I led the group around the lake at Peters which went pretty well until we hit the big hills toward the end of the loop where some of the little ones (including my daughter) were challenged...and had to walk some sections. We stayed as a group and waited for the walkers (there's no shame in walking) and then continued to ride downhill to the end of the park.

About halfway down we passed the "trailer group" heading back uphill. At the bottom of the hill at the spillway/restroom we turned around and headed uphill. Near the dam the hill and distance was wearing on some of the kids and they had to take some breaks and walk a bit. But then once we crested that hill it was all smooth sailing and the kids got their second wind and cruised back to Irvine Park in fine style.

Hanging out and stuffing ourselves and the raffle was fun once we got back to the cars. Thanks everyone for coming out and showing our kids some good times.

OK here's the pics...sorry I don't know most people's names yet so some photos don't have captions.
