cbharping air-oh dabs on Tunnel
Santa Barbara, CA. Warning: Should Denmother and Winston PM and invite you on a ride, politely decline and add both screen names to your ignore list.
It was a beautiful day for riding in Santa Barbara. Denmother and Roger, B-Rad and Curtis had attended a wedding on Saturday. While Mechmann, Allison, Marshall Willanholly, cbharping and myself came up to ride. Carla aka cbharping was a little reluctant to tackle the SB chunk but Denmother and I assured her it would be a good time. (First timers = Allison, Meckmann, cbharping & Marshall Willanholly.) Tunnel would be first up on the menu. Marshall Willanholly getting his first taste:  Same with Allison:  Denmother:  Roger stayed in the back to sweep and give cbharping a little coaching. cbharping gets a close look at line possibilities:  That body armor came in handy. Denmother leads the way:  cbharping rolling through:      Roger sweeping:  Taking a break after the first extending chunk. About half way down Tunnel, I was bringing up the rear with cbharping to my front. Mechmann was shooting a video clip of Roger up ahead. The trail narrowed with exposure to the right. cbharping stopped and put out the “aero dab.” She and her bike tumbled off the trail. (Mechmann saw this as well as he finished shooting the video clip of Roger.)
The oohs and ahs from cbharping started. I figured she would only fall 10 yards, but the oohs and ahs kept coming and coming, which was frightening. She came to a rest maybe 50 yards off the trail. Her bike was part way down and to the right upside down against a bush. Her goggles were hanging from a tree branch:  Mechman and I went quickly over the side to help. Mechmann must have been wearing his Superman UnderRoos, because he was down to cbharping within moments. I stopped halfway down, to allow Mechmann time to assess the situation and also to avoid kicking rocks down on top of them.  She was shaken up but fortunately did not have life threatening injuries. She complained of some back pain but was willing to tough out the climb.  Roger is on hand to provide help from above:  Working their way up with Mechmann always willing to help a girl out:   Back on the trail:  cbharping was in no condition to ride out so we started the hike down. cb leaned on Marshall Willanholly for support while Roger, B-rad and Mechmann worked the bike shuffle.  (Sometimes pushing two bikes and sometimes riding a bike down a ways and running back up the trail for another. B-rad and Mechmann’s specialty. We also caught a break when a concerned hiker walked cb’s bike down.) B-rad and Mechman working the bike relay:    Denmother riding a short segment:  B-rad accepting the Roger says ride this line challenge:    Once we got down to the first fire road section, cbharping was able to remount her bike and coast down with a little help here and there on those annoying short ups. Obviously cbharping & Marshall Willanholly would called it a day. cb was in good spirits as they loaded up to head back down south. Cbharping got herself checked out at her Urgent Care Facility where it was discovered that she has a compression fracture in her lower back. She will see an Orthopedic on Monday and is on good drugs. (No movement restrictions and she is resting comfortably at home.) Now was cb the only person to fall off Tunnel today? Ah, no…Curtis managed to get off line on a narrow section, but used his cat like reflexes and only slide maybe 10 yards off the trail. His bike stayed on the trail. Get well soon Carla!!! PS – Allison’s Totem was having sympathy pains:

another great write up winston! i can't believe carla's fall, that looked nasty! was glad to read she was able to get back on the bike towards the end and wasn't too seriously injured. get well soon!!!

Nice write up and pics. Let's see some more. Very sorry to hear about CBharping's spill and injury. Hopefully a short recovery. Justin lending a helping hand as always

I can't praise Justin aka Mechmann aka Supermann enough. He did a fantastic job coming to Carla's aid.
He is definitely someone you want to ride with. Edit: Carla was one tough cookie as you probably have already guessed. She also remained calm in spite of one heck of a fall. The Manns will have more pics of the ride including some embarrasing moments by Roger and I on Cold Springs.

Carla, heal up soon! you really are tough to climb out and still make your way out with your back injury.. i've hurt my back in the past is freakin sucks. winston, great pics as usual. justin, nice bike and way to "support" Carla

Great RR, as usual we STR members get to re-live your rides without even 1 pedal stroke.
My best goes to Carla, I hope for a quick recovery, that fall looked pretty darn scary! Thank goodness for Justin's supermann skills. Let us know how your doing once your settled in? Thanks again for the pictures

Harden the F Up

The day started out innocently enough, with Winston climbing in the back of the truck (Justin did also) since it was packed with 7 of us in the cab:
 Getting suited up for the descent:  Group shot!  (minus Curtis, who was too hung over for the first run) Bike shot  You first, no you... B-rad actually took the lead, and I believe, held it most of the day.  Den Mother has her game face on  Anyone missing a bike part?  Roger  Carla...she wasn't dabbing, she was taking a break  Regroup in the sun  Nancy and Winston   Carla and Roger    Chunky ledge  I had stopped at a pretty hairy section to walk it and find my line. I waited and waited... I wanted Justin to get a vid of me riding it. I heard Nancy yell for Justin, then another biker stop and talk to someone. I waited for him to ride down and asked what was going on. He said that one of the girls in our group had fallen down some exposure about 30 ft and was moaning and not in good shape. I high-tailed it back up the trail. By the time I got there Carla was up on the trail, as was her bike, and she was sitting on some rocks looking to be in pain. No tears, no complaining, just kind of collecting herself. We decided to head down with two extra bikes (Justin was walking with her) and a few extra helmets. We got down to Eric and Brad, who were further down the trail than I was. Eric walked with Carla, and after we came upon the cool hiker willing to walk her bike back down Justin and Brad had fun playing "demo day" on the bikes alternating between riding a line, leaving a bike, running up, riding down another bike, then rinse and repeat. Nancy and I, and Winston eventually just waited for a bit, then rode down til we caught up to the group hiking down, then would wait, then ride. I felt really bad for Carla cause she definitely looked like she wasn't feeling great. She did really well, though. I think I would've been balling and freaking out, but she toughed it out, and even got on her bike for a fire road descent down to the waiting truck. As Winston said, she did seem like she was in good spirits when we got back to the parking lot. I know I was just really glad when I saw her sitting up and able to walk. Hope she is able to get back out there and feels okay soon!! I did get my video, btw (sorry, turn your head or monitor): After they headed out toward some kind of care, we loaded up for a Cold Springs shuttle with Curtis. Smooooth - up at Cold Springs   Curtis pulling up the rear (that lasted for about 5 minutes!)  He just wanted to stop and wave, eh  Finishing the section off  I rode it...  Er, up to that part anyway Nancy  Roger goes under the bus. Next. |
