Here’s a short RR on the Bommer Canyon Ride today. Met at 7:30 am at the Bommer Canyon parking lot off of Shady Canyon in Irvine. The plan was to ride 18 miles and tour some new single track that the Irvine Ranch Land reserve has recently opened up. JamR (Adam) was leading with the help of 4 other assistants (Chopper included). Showing up was Jeff (Hoosierdaddy)… his knee is doing just fine thank you! And CC… her knee is also doing fine, thank you! Maxwell even showed up directly from work and 11 other riders. Up, up we went to Rabbit Run… down, down Rabbit Run (getting very loose and slippery). Got one picture of Jeff start from the top of Rabbit Run. Unfortunately, he had an altercation with a rather large split rock on Turtle Island single track and left some blood behind. A lot of fire road riding. Climbed up and over to the new nature station, picked up more water and went up Stage Coach… climbed back out and up Ridge Route and back down to cars. Whole ride was a little over 4 hours … mileage??? weather was perfect with a warm sun and a cool wind to cool us off. Didn’t take many pictures… just too much fun riding!

Nice! Glad to see there was a good turnout. I hope they overbooked slightly to make up for doofs like me who reserved a spot then didn't make it. Deepest apologies to anyone who missed out because of me, but a nasty headache woke me at 3am, and I was in no shape to roll out the door this morning.
Looking forward to more pics & comments, and to a 2nd chance at this ride next time it's offered.

Man, it sure was a fun ride.
Nice singletrack pay-off's for the fireroad climbs. Great to get to ride with more of the STR group! Jeff kept it fun, with constant one handed wheelies, and showing me all of the fun lines down Rabbit Run! ![]()

Thanks Justin, getting healthy, but not 100% yet. This was my first time at Bommer Cyn and my first docent led ride. It was a little over 17 miles of fire road and ST and about 3500ft of climbing. The single track trails overall were moderate with a few techincal sections.
One that comes to mind is Rabbit Run. It's a fun dh section, that has a steep descent with rock rollers and some pretty loose dirt. Jeff (Hoosierdaddy) and Maxwell rode it down pretty cleanly, with Jeff going down it several times to get it just right. Great job guys! I heard from Jam R (Adam) that they are planning to offer up a Intermediate class that will go down this section and hang around and instruct on this section until everyone's ready to move on. Another section of single track had a rock climb that a few of the riders decided to try serveral times until they cleaned it. Again Jeff and Maxwell were in the mix. Jeff's last attempt was of him nearly clearing the last bolder when he lost his balance and went over and landed between the rocks. He landed on his back and smacked his head pretty hard, cracking his helmet. But besides a few scrapes and headache later he seemed to be ok. I thought the ride was listed as an Intermediate ride, but I guess it was actually listed as an advaced ride. I would say anyone with Intermediate skills that has been doing enough riding to get through the climbs would do fine on this ride. The techinical sections can all be walked down if you're not comfortable with rock rollers. I decided to walk most of the rock sections, because I didn't want to crash and hit my head again so soon. Thank you Adam (Jam R), Greg (OMR) and all the docents, you guys did a great job out there. It was great meeting Maxwell, Danny (Mullark) and Genny (gennydv). Hope to see you guys out on the trails again soon. I gave one of the docent, Steve, an STR sticker, he said that he and his wife like to ride and his wife is looking for some girls to ride with. Hopefully we'll see them on this site soon. This trail is only going to get better, especially after some rain and some trail maintenance. If you see Adam (Jam R) looking for recruits please sign up to help with maintaning these trails. Adam is also looking for riders to show up at the land preserve meeting that take place once a month. He feels that a greater more consistant representation from the mtb community would go far into showing the powers that be that we are investing in the overall future of these trails. ~ cc

It was a fun ride yesterday and really nice to see OMR, Maxwell, CC, gennydv, Mullark and Hoosierdaddy out there.
The weather cooperated for the entire ride and the pace was comfortable with some fun re-grouping at various points to talk and play on some of the rocks. I was a little worried when I received the radio call from Chopper that we had a biker down with blood coming from a head wound....but when I found out it was Jeff (Hoosierdaddy), I felt better since he's starting to make regular blood donations on our rides ![]() I just wish I had witnessed the fun. I guess he cleaned a particular rock-gap on the Turtle Island (aka Shady Oaks Single Track); so he and Maxwell kept playing on the rock until one of them fell......I guess Jeff won! All in all a really good ride and finishing up with a short hike-a-bike up the Camarillo trail from the Nix Nature Center. We'll be doing a similar ride on the 22nd of this month but at a little easier pace since it's scheduled as a moderate/intermediate ride. Hope to see everyone there again. And for those who are interested, we're doing another 40+ mile epic on the 29th starting from the Quail Hill Trail Head. See ya on the trails ![]()

Thanks to all the docents and it was great to meet more of the STR family---looking forward to more rides with all of you in the future!! VQ/CC training rides---here we come! Genny |

It was good to meet everyone on Sat. (CC, Dale, Maxwell, Kevin, etc.) Too many fireroad climbs for my taste but a fun ride none the less. Jeff and Maxwell, you guys are my heroes for even trying to ride down Rabbit Run, that dh section is super skecthy.
![]() OMR and JamR sorry I didn't introduce myself, but I was out late on Friday so I wasn't really awake for the first half of the ride and then I ended up in the faster group for the last half (I have no idea how that happened!!). Hope everyone had fun. |
