Default Mammoth Labor day weekend

This is my first thread start so go easy on me. So I got my Mammoth MTB cherry popped this weekend and I had such a blast. It had been raining with mountain thunder showers earlier throughout the week so the trails were nice and tacky. Still a bit loose with pumice in a few places but I guess it was as good as mammoth can get. The weather was a perfect 73 degrees and sunny. Trails were phenomenal.
Man, that place kicks ass. So much to ride, so little time.
I took about 2 hours of helmet cam footage on Sunday. Check out me getting a face full of pumice on lower Kamikaze. Maybe post more vids soon.

Sounds like you did get it about as good as it gets! Mammoth is always a bit loose, the pumice and all. I do hope you thought of the rest of us here in SoCal... You know it was like 100 degrees down here this weekend?!?!

Sounds like you had a blast!

Couldn't quite tell if that crash was from the big hole that was in the landing, or had they filled it in? Good stuff, I need to get my helmet cam working again.

Are you sure you went to Mammoth?

My ride report from the first week of August- Hot as hell. Dusty as hell. Pumice everywhere. Dry as hell. Rutted as hell. Loose pumice 8 inches deep. Hot as hell. Jumps everywhere. Trails everywhere. Hot as hell. Technical as hell. Scary as hell. Fun as hell......

Yuup, juuuuust the way I like it!

It was a joke Son!

It rained a few days before our trip. Didn't do one bit of good!

I would have killed to have those conditions! Nice video!

Default Friday

Friday was the best surface conditions I have ever seen up there. It got progressively drier throughout the weekend. Monday was still good, just not as good. On Friday you could see moist dirt in even the biggest, deepest pumice berms. It was a blast.

Congratulations! Mammoth is one of the few great places left to ride with lifts (and a DH bike) and close enough to go for the weekend. My husband and I have been riding there since they opened. It's been so long, I don't even remember when that was. LOL... 1980's I think. I can remember wearing spandex, a T-shirt, foam helmet with cover riding a totally rigid bike. Boy, we sure have come a long way ba by!!!

Default Missing Rock Creek

Allison - I can understand why you have missed this ride. This was the first time I had ridden it in 3 years. When you are up in that area the Mountain is just too temping. I was up there for 4 days this trip so doing that on day 3, after 2 solid days on the hill, sounded good. The guys I was riding with liked the idea of saving the $37 for the day. I have a pass so the expense doesn't effect me.
In my opinion it is a better trail than any of the runs at Mammoth. It is fast and flowy with a few tech sections to keep you honest. The two main problems are that it is too short and there is no lift. I will continue to ride it once in a while.

The only way we ever seem to fit it in is on Saturday afternoons. You get the group to commit to quitting riding the park by 3pm and leaving for Rock Creek by 3:30pm. But in order to make that work, everyone has to start riding when the lifts open and skip lunch (snacks only while on the gondola). Try getting a group of DHers to agree on anything!!!

Forgot to mention, we did this ride on our DH rigs, muy fun!!!!

Default Helmet cam

Steve did have an interesting rig. He attached an old tripod head to that piece of aluminum. He then put a curve in the aluminum so it would match his helmet. He used zip-ties to secure the plate to the helmet. The camera was completely adjustable by turning one knob. It also looked pretty safe because there were no bolts going into the helmet. He did say that using this has made him want a real helmet cam.

I use my Archos AV500 portable DVR with the integrated bullet cam you can buy for it. It works brilliantly. I just got some velcro setup to mount the bullet cam to my goggles and keep the DVR in my camelback.
As far as using a regular cam corder or digital camera, I dunno. Duct tape? I've seen many videos with the camera mounted to the bike frame but I couldn't tell ya how to go about doing it.

I know it's kinda late but I thought I'd post it anyway since I already went through the trouble of uploading it onto youtube.
