Default Beginner Trails in Idyllwild?

Hey Guys,

Me and the misses are heading up to Idyllwild and she wants to bring the bikes. Yikes. So, I'm in need of some mild trails up there. We're staying at a cabin in town. Loops are a must, out and backs are good too. Typical trails around here she'll ride is cactus in Whiting, coyote at aliso. I think meadows would be too much for her.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Hurkey Creek is a short loop 11mi. It's a few miles shorter then the 24 hour races because they add on some zig zag stuff. When you pay for parking ask the ranger to draw you a map on the sheet they give you.

Not sure how easy you want but you can do the Ernie Maxwell trail down and up but that has lots of hikers and you need to watch your speed. You will need to double back up the hill or climb up then ride down which might be better.

He posted for "Beginner" trails. So I told him something a beginner would want to know. Going from sea level to +5600" has an impact on your endurance whether your a weekend rider or professional. Otherwise people wouldn't go to the hills to train.

Piss of guero. Go huck somthin G-Money. Yeah, Guero and I are buds. where is Ernie Maxwell?

Wait, I think I've ridden Ernie.... Does that have the ledge drop off right at the top and puts you down at the street leve.... if so, that trail is bad ass, very fun and would be great for her.

I've only been to Idyllwild once for cross country camp in high school. I just remember steep hills that sucked ass. Maybe you should ask Steppie and get his advice. Uh hunk, yeah

Thats the one. Short but sweet 2.5 mi with 1000" of climbing. A few creek crossings some bolder climbs and a few fallen trees that are 6' around. Stay away on the weekends to many hikers on the trail.

Ernie Maxwell would be good-- manageable but really fun. I ride it a lot after work & always enjoy it.

If you want more after that, you might ride down to the Hub, that's the area just behind the Arts Academy. Just ride straight down Tollgate rd and you'll see it there. Bud (the local legend) leads a social-pace ride every Saturday on these trails. The ride starts at 8am Saturday.

I stopped in Bud's shop a few years back (during the 24 hr race at Hurkey). I was asking about the Sat rides. He told me they ride every Sat unless the snow is above the hubs. I was back for Christmas and a group was at the Kettle for the post ride breakfast. There was about 4" of snow out front.

He was on his second hip then I would guess he is on his third now. Cool, guy he gave me a map of about a dozen trails in the area. I only rode Hurkey in the 3 yrs my family had a cabin up there. What a waste of resources.
