This is my first post here and hope you enjoy the photos. I recently returned from a "family"/riding vacation from Durango, CO., Crested Butte, and Brianhead,UT. These are photos I took of the 401 trail in Crested Butte, probably the most photographed trails in Colorado. It is only 14.4 miles long with 2200 feet vertical, but with climbing up to an elevation of 11,350 my heart felt like it was going to pop towards the top.

This is where the trail starts downhill and kept me grinning from ear to ear. From here it is several miles of downhill bliss until you climb back up into aspen meadows. This would be a great section for Mountain Bike Bill to make a helmet cam video. I loved this trail so much I had to come back and ride it the next day. It is not the most technically challenging trail, but was one of the modt scenic, up with the Tahoe Flume trail.

Ahhhh, was just there this past late June - for my second year. We did Fruita, CB, Telluride, and Durango.
Your 401 shots are great. Isn't that just a fun trail? Not really techy, but oh so fun. And talk about the view! Thanks for the 2 minute vacation this morning (I'm at work)! Super pix! ![]() |

Thanks for taking the time to post the pix. I've been reading and hearing about this area for years. I've got to get out there. It does seem funny to see everything so green still. Obviously you like the high altitude rides. A lot over 11k. Wow!
I'm thinking of hitting this area in the first part of Oct, providing the weather holds as I'm told they can get early snow occasionally.

Thanks for sharing the pic of 401. You're right, I had forgotten how really beautiful this trail is. I remember thinking that someone had invented the perfect single track tool that created perfect single track where ever they wanted to go. I also remember thinking that I now understood what riding with the rythm gods meant.... I also remember thinking that I couldn't be in my lowest gear going over some of those 11,000 ft passes!
