Default RR: Rainy Day Mammoth ride

I went for a solo ride earlier today before it began raining and thundering here. I started riding at 9:30 and was back by 1:00. Around 1:30 its started pouring rain here in Mammoth and has not stopped since. Not much to do when it rains so I will post a RR, well this too

My route today was a shuttle ride.

Started at Minerat Summit. Down Mountain View (this is where I got the Mammoth group lost last year). Uptown trail to PaperRoute. Took PP to Lakes Trail. From here you jump on the Panarama Dome Singletrack and take this to Mammoth Rock trail. Up a dirt road back to town.

Not sure of Mileage but I would say 15ish. Overall had a net loss of elevation of -2,300ft.

Yeah they need it. All of the lakes were extremely low. Saddlebag Lag now has an island right in the middle that never existed before.

Thanks for the report Matt, we'll be up there next weekend. Hopefully they'll get some more rain and firm up the dirt.

Hanzo have you ever tried riding the trail on the East side of Saddlebag Lake? I know that it goes into the 20 Lake Basin/Hover Wilderness Area, but it looks like maybe 5-6 miles is still in National Forest.

Sometimes timing is everything. That rain is going to make for some awesome conditions in a day or two. You are stoked!

Hey Dean,
Nope, I have only hiked the west side of the lake because it was a shorter route(3-4 miles) to get to the other side. The 20 Lake Basin is beautiful though. You may want to email the folks up there since there is no phone.

Niiice! Love that part of LT -- very steep on both sides (and if you fell, you'd nearly fall right down onto Lake Mary Road!). Looks like they completed the bridges since the last time I was there riding down from the top with my son, Willie (couple of years ago now). We had a dicey time getting through that portion of the trail as the bridges were literally hanging by a wire (scary!). We rode over them anyway (*gulp*). Dumb-ass dad.

Can't wait to get up there again. Another good ride goes down the long backside trail called Off The Top (great afternoon ride, and a long one at about 12 miles back down to the Lodge). Someone else posted this map site for the Mammoth Bike Park once, but here it is again: Mammoth Bike Park Trail Map (check out the Flash map -- very cool). Von-Skipp's ride goes mostly along the left side of the trails (though it does look from one of your pics that you possibly started off to the right of the Lodge at overlook point?... whatever).

d step asked about the right/ east side of saddleback lake...

the one time i rode it.. ('85 or '86?), it's basically a flat singeletrack out to the edge of the wilderness...

and sure as sunrise, there was a ranger who was cool, but also made it very clear i had gone as far as i was allowed (which i knew...
