i was certainly toast after the ride and can feel the legs today. i was initally in a world of hurt, kinda in a drug-induced phase of semi-coherent state on the climb from the vicoden. felt alittle better later in the ride. yea you gotta love steep/slidy trails to enjoy this one, espeically the last mile
note too self:don't do LONG SA rides until the fall! |

nice pics.. makes me wish I had time and went along to meet you guys and the ride looks like a lot of fun.
I guess I have nothing to compare a hard ride to an easy ride other than just being a hilly area, what is some of the more difficult sections of this ride?

The ride starts out with a 6.5 mile climb up Indian Truck Trail. You climb about 2500ft in that distance. From there it's more climbing on Main Divide. We ended up with around 4000ft of climbing total. You probably climb up about another 800-1000ft in the 4 miles to Upper Holy Jim from the turn off of Indian Truck Trail to Main Divide. Coldwater is about 5 miles long, and you descend all 4000ft in that distance. There are also 2 hike a bikes, so in total you probably end up descending slightly more. The top has some fun ridge sections and other cool parts. A lot of it is fairly deep leaves and DG (decomposed granite) where your tires just sink and usually head off the side of the hill. Once you climb the final hike-a-bike it's really about a mile of descent and probably close to 1000ft. The majority is really steep, really loose dirt/sand. One guy had a FS 4" 29er bike, but aside from that, I had 6" FS, Ben had his 5.5, Denny was on a Nomad 6", Mark was on a Bullit 7", DFT was on his Stinky (?) that probably had 7-8", and Justin was on his Socom with 7-8" of travel. Not a really HT friendly ride either There are a ton of good rides in the area that would be good on a HT, but this probably isn't one of them. To be honest, there are plenty of better singletracks also ![]() Definitely try out Trabuco, Holy Jim, and San Juan before attempting Coldwater. |

yea, the last mile after the last hike-a-bike we call skiing with your bike! or lock and load baby!! i'm one of the few weirdos that truely loves ultra steep/slidy trails, so i was at home
some of the straightaway sections that are slightly off camber are comedy to watch people as you gradually drift to one side, back tire fishtailing everywhere. for comparison, if folks have ridden can't see bottom drop on bell ridge, there are long sections of coldwater that are about say 15% easier than can't see bottom (that is only like 100 feet verticle) for long stretches. and also, this trail has the hardest switchbacks of any trail i have ridden. good job all, it was a baker out there!ps. more than suspension, a slack head angle, large tires and good brakes are the most imporant thing (not real rocky at all) |

Nice RR. I love this kind of trail but one of the things that bums me out about Coldwater is that the bottom half is a reroute of the orginal trail. This reroute is for the most part of one big redicuRUT that is not really sustainable. Now granted I have vitrually not lifted a finger to help out with this trail (Debrushed a small section while on a ride there once) so I have really not earned much right to complain.
I would love to see some efforts put into getting a recreational easement through the development that blocked access to orginal trailhead and restore the orginal route. The original line follows contours enough that it would be sustainable. As it stands right now, Coldwater trail does not even go into Coldwater Canyon. Here is a link to a map that shows the orginal line. My 2 cents. ![]() |
