Default El Prieto - Awesome Trail

So I have to say that is a great single track. I rode it for the first time Friday afternoon. What a blast! Since I haven't ridden it before some of the drops and techinical spots of the trail caught my for a suprise. I loved it.

Without a doubt one of my favorite trails in all of So. Cal. Drops? Technical spots? Surprises? Rock steps?

...Time for me to visit an old friend.

I agree. Though I managed to get my next 3 Saturdays booked with stuff other than riding

Well, I suppose I could go next Saturday as long as I got back early.

Word of caution to those new to that area. Even though it is pretty dry there is still a lot of poison oak. Take care and perhaps precautions, like using Ivy Block or bringing Tecnu for after. George and I can tell you that bad P.O. is not fun. It's not super bad on El P, but if you do Sunset, that is more technical and heavy with P.O. I also recommend Middle Sam Merrill and Ken Burton as singletracks in that area. Did an epic and hit them all a couple of months ago. Great fun, but got the P.O., thus the warning.

I am not in super good shape (yet), it took me about 1.5 hours from the car at the parking area to do the loop. Not sure of the trail name, but if you stay left on the fire road after you pass the bottom part of El Prieto, then back down El Prieto, then back to the car.

IMO to drive up from OC only to ride El Prieto is a waste, it's great, but it's short. I would do a longer loop and finish on El Prieto... like mt lowe to middle merrill to echo mtn to sunset to el prieto.

not my time of year for this ride.... poison oak and it's not the coolest over there.

BUllpucky, Hot, schmot, I say we start at JPL, ride over to Lake, climb the lower part of Merrill, then continue on all the way up to the tunnel. Descend back down Upper Merrill to Echo, then over to Sunset and finish on El P.

4th of Aug works for me.

It's about a 2 hour loop....I don't climb very fast (to much gut), and it takes me about 45 minn to the top... I live really close and ride this about twice a week... there is also a way to climb up chaney trail (paved) about 2.5 miles, then down lower sunset trail..about 1.8 miles, then make a small mile climb, about 1.2 miles and then down El Preito....this way is a little more fun and not just fireroads...

I am with Bunner on this one, hot and poison oak...great winter and fall trail. I like the stuff up the mountain higher when it is hot. If you go to do it, you can hammer out Brown Mt. climb and get it done early AM. It is a short loop.

Sounds good, how about a 6 am start time? Any later and you get a lot of hikers on lower sam merrill and warmer weather on the climb.

August 4th? Damn. The Iron Horse and I will be destroying the trails of Mammoth (and Lower Rock Creek) that weekend.

Don't worry, STR will be spending plllenty of time in the San Gab's this fall! Trust ME on that!

Hey I want to get an El Prieto ride going... a recurring ride. Anyone else in the LA area want to get that going? What I usually do is the fire road up and then the El Prieto trail down, which is about an 8 mile loop from the parking lot on Windsor. Maybe Saturday mornings? Weeknight rides now that the days are shorter? I love this trail and want to get more people hooked on it.
