So I decided to go straight to the horse's mouth and try to find out why the work was done on Lynx over the weekend - way too much speculation was going on.
I recieved an email from SHARE President - Keith. He was not there so could not comment. I did not see anything regarding the work posted on the sharemtb.com site, nor did a friend of mine, who is a member of share, receive a notice of the work. I also recieved an email back from the parks which reads: The work that was done on the Lynx Trail was done to keep the trail safe and prevent accidents. I sent a follow up email for clarification but have not recieved a reply yet.

Proof that sanitation to accommodate the lowest common denominator was the purpose. Thank you for making my point, although your post was seemingly intended on posting the facts, and not showing any emotion. I wasn't aware that braking bumps were a safety hazard. From other posts, it was said that only braking bumps were removed.

Regardless, I rode it yesterday and it was pretty much wrecked. Why in the hell would you do trailwork during the driest time of the year? I think that the work may have been needed, but should have been done during a wetter time of year... Just my opinion.

Good point, especially with the kind of dirt present. It would seem that the leadership doesn't understand how and when to do trailwork.

I received a follow up email from Steve Jax: "We continue to maintain our trails on an on going basis to ensure our park visitors safety."
This was clearly coming down from the park and not from SHARE - although it should be questioned. I do not see the reasoning behind this. As the old saying goes, you can get hurt just crossing the street. Why does flattening out one trail make the park a safer place?

Those emails were very profound and enlightening from the ranger. Thanks Steve Jax for helping the public understand why that specific work was done on that specific trail at this specific time of year. Thank you for smoothing out that section and making it safer...but what about the rock chunk section before it, and after it...that section could be dangerous...

First off, I do appreciate Shares for the work they do and I would like to be more involved(work schedule permitting). The next meeting is July 2 and I will make an effort to attend.
I rode Links on Sunday as well. I can see both sides of this issue and I do understand a need for trial work or for filling in ruts, removing brake bumps, it also seemed to me that it was widened through that section as well, so I can see why some view that section as being ruined. The techical part of Links is why I choose to go down it rather than some of the others. Plus there is a lot less opposite traffic. We may see more riders going up Links now that it's been cleared of the "unsafe" sections which will probably be more dangerous than before. For what ever reasons, if it takes this type of work to keep trails open or to open up new or re-open old for us mtbers, so be it. You can probably bet or at least hope that there will be more involvement/suggestions/oppinions for the next time. You can count me in on all of the above. Now lets ride! |

Again I have not seen the work nor have any ax to grind here (I have friends who are members in Share, know/have met current/past officers, particiapted in events organized by them and very much appreciate the majority of the efforts put forth by the myriad mtb volunteers including share members) but candidly if these efforts are done via advocacy it only seems logical a forthright and clear message be sent proactively and in reaction to the post. I know responses have been given but still seems very few have a good understanding of what they are responding to. Just an idea, STR is certainly a hub to get the voice out. Maybe going forward post up work will be done (extend invite to users if needed), post up pics to show conditions before and after to "prove" efforts were needed and the best solution was undertaken. think this has been done informally in past (whether or not vols come forth communication and explanation of "plans" are set forth) hey think of it as a member recruiting tool. ![]() I believe many of the individuals involved in these type of volunteer efforts live and breathe mtb like many of us (i have personally ridden with and respect most of these folks irrespective if our opinions are the same) but some of the recent activity/dialogue (or lack thereof) is not building a stronger mtb community (JMO). while other posts refer to all the goodwill built with land managers and park rangers please do not lose sight of another iimportant constituency; the entire mtb community. Again no way to please all but I firmly believe less agitation may ensue in the future if handled differently. Not my typical post, off my soapbox, im back to work confirmed was undertaken by Share (lead or otherwise)

i rode lynx yesterday and did not mind the changes. trail was in good shape. it seems like the section of trail that people have a beef with was the removal of the chatter steps about 1/2 way down the trail. i've always equated chatter steps with speed bumps and welcome the change. to those that like "technical" aspect of the chatter steps, don't worry, i'm sure they'll be back in 2-3 months.
i remember 2-3 years ago when share did work on lynx and there was a similar outcry that the trail had been ruined forever. does anyone rememeber how the trail used to be? does anyone miss the lynx of 4 years ago and can't stand the way the trail is now? thanks to those that represent mtbers in the community and maintain the trails for all to use. |

I gotta tell ya... I rode it tonight (down) on the 29erSS and was able to cruise down it. I expected it to be pretty "wrecked" as some have stated above... but such was not the case. The work that was done was actually pretty minimal, especially compared to what we did to it a couple of years back. It does need to be packed down and I wish there was a way to water the trail to do this as the moisture content in the ground is very, very low. In fact, I'm changing out the SB8 on the back and putting the Nev back on... need the traction now.

There is a way to pack in water. Spent many days with one of these on my back when I worked for California Department of Forestry. Back in my day they were made of metal and very uncomfortable. The new ones look much better. Dean

exactly...as long as the trail is safe now, that is what matters most.
