Default Mountain Biking in the San Diego Mountains ~vid~

A group of some of us San Diego riders (and a displaced Colorado Freak) spent a day playing in the Cuyamaca and Laguna Mountains on May 19th, 2007. Our 37 mile adventure, included the Cuyamaca's East Mesa, the Indian Creek and Pine Mountain trails, the Laguna Mount Recreation Area and the upper part of Noble Canyon. There were plenty of spring time flowers in bloom which made this a truly beautiful day to be out on a mountain bike. Right Click on the image to download the 8 minute and 29 second video is 114MB in size.

Great job in capturing the freedom of the trails spirit... good choice of music too! Looks like Steve has his legs back in fine working order again.

Bill, you guys seemed to get more rain than we did, it was green up there. I keep meaning to ride Big Laguna during the spring flowers...missed it this year, your video will have to do.

I am so looking foward to riding Cannell this weekend, I totally need a green fix.

Did you use your new High-Def camera on this ride?

Yep, I was using the new setup. There are some issues with HDV but I have decided they are not enough to go back to Standard Def. It is hard to showcase Hi-Def in a web enviroment, but I really digging it on the home screen.

Nicely done.....Mr. Bill! Good choice on the soundtrack.

A little birdy told me something is missing from the vid, though?

Hmmmmm, You must be referring to my most excellent Body Slam at speed (Or my impression of a human pebble skipping across a dirt pond) going down the upper portion of Noble. I'm saving that for what might be an end-of-year biffs reel. That crash revealed another quirk with HDV. To start off with, all camcorders I have messed with up until now, when you crash or impact the camera there is a momentary "hit" or drop in the video at the moment of impact. Something different happens with HDV. Since the video is being processed and compressed as it goes to tape, there is about a 1 - 2 second delay/buffer between when the video going through the lens and when it gets onto the tape. When you impact the camera and take the hit, not only do you drop the video at the moment of impact you also loose the buffer. In the case of this crash I lost the 1-2 seconds leading up to the impact. Which of course was the money shot! What I have is riding along footage (with plenty o'speed if I do say so myself) and then a dust cloud of me on the ground, moaning and groaning followed by me complaining about my mangina. The bottom line is HDV sucks as a helmetcam for capturing your own crashes.

Then I suggest not doing that....crash that is! This is what happens when you age: you state the obvious and feel that you've said something profound.
