I can't believe someone would waste their time making a ramp like that.

Hopefully you guys get some good pictures of the mtn bikers who are helping to break this thing down. Send that to the sierra club.

i totally agree kicker should not have been built there and not fair to generalize (sierra club members NOR MTB'ers) but in the few experiences/interactions i have encountered (mosting in the bay area) good intentions but far too much "AGENDA" going on.

As one great "philosoper" said, why can't we all just get along

btw- is it me or in pics above did they put the shortest guy up front to make the ramp look bigger

Maybe if they would have posted a handicap access sign, they wouldn't have been so opposed.

Great, with that, Paul's previous experience, and this ramp, I'm sure that Paul will be hunting for head the next time he's hiking up there.

Seriously, it was a bonehead move to put the stunt where it is, but I can't help but interject a commentary about the state of affairs in this country. How and why does anyone think that the best course of preservation for our National Forrests and other open spaces for the future generations is to essentially keep the citizens of this country from enjoying them in the here and now? If a tree falls in the forest but nobody sees or hears it, does it still fall? If the Sierra Club and friends get their way, the answer would be that it didn't fall; because no one would be allowed to have a peak for themselves to answer the question.

The responsible use and enjoyment of our National Forests and open spaces by as many people as possible is the best way to ensure for their long term survival. The more people that care about something in this country, the greater the likelyhood the resource/issue will be properly addressed by the legislature. Sequestering the beauty of our open spaces away so that no one can enjoy them without the blessing of lobbiest groups is the fastest way to make sure that fewer and fewer people care about what's out there. The fewer people that care, the fewer people that will be left to oppose further building and destruction of our valuable open lands. The folks at the Sierra Club and other "conservation" groups just don't get it. But then again, who would expect them to. They are a bunch of pious bitches who value their opinions more than the freedoms of their fellow countrymen.

Now with all that out of the way... I can help with removal on Sunday or late in the afternoon/early evening on Friday.

Chris
Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like you are defending this person's right to build a jump on a public trail but at the same time opposing building on and destroying open spaces. What's the difference? If I have a right to build an artificial structure like this one, why can't I just go ahead and build myself a little cabin on it also?

I'll respond to your points with another question: Who gets to decide? Who decides what's responsible or not? Is it the mtb community? The Sierra Club? The BLM? The oil, mining, logging, or agriculture interests? The real estate "developers"? You see where I'm going here, right?

Along with hikers and other recreational users, the mtb community walks a very fine line between preservation, access, and development. Just like you, I'm all in favor of my version of responsible land use. But in my version, that includes a responsibility to leave some land "unused" so that wildlife can thrive and future generations might have the same joy of exploring untrampled lands. Contrary to your idea that hiding away these lands will keep people from caring, I put a lot of value in the notion of untouched areas, even though I will never see them myself, and I know I'm not alone. I don't think that makes me a "pious bitch": I think it makes me a good caretaker who values the big picture above his immediate desires.

I bet there's a reason that SHARE is called SHARE: We share our trails with hikers, equestrians, animals, etc. For any one person or group to unilaterally decide how best to use those trails is not an exercise of the "personal freedoms" you mention; It is a foolishly shortsighted and selfish move that tramples the legitimate rights and concerns of others who share a stake in how our public lands are managed. Putting this ramp up where it doesn't belong and isn't needed was selfish and reckless, endangering access for all of us.

(End of rant)

Thanks, guys, for the update on the removal plans, and I'm glad it's happening quickly. I really wish I could go, but I have an event at work this afternoon that is absolutely mandatory.

Oh yeah - the handicap sign...classic
