wow...

huge group. i had a blast, even though i was suffering with the SS thing.

so many cool people came out for this ride, thanks to everyone for showing up and making it fun.

it sucked to not be able to clean alot of the tough technical spots that i can usually make with gears. i need to drop more weight and get stronger before i can make that stuff SS.

we had quite a bit of carnage. allison crashed 3 times, aqua crashed with flair on the cocktail rock jump, sauce crashed, and the kid (ridehard)crashed pretty good too. the carnage was mostly superficial, but it would be nicer to not have any at all.

mechanicals mostly limited to flat tires. mtbflat (i mean cat) had a couple, benhiemen had 3 i think, the drunkard had a couple and wound up hiking the end of the trail due to a torn sidewall.

Aquaholic had a head on collision with an organ donor on a Enduro SL. his front brake line got ripped off in the crash and that took a while to fix.

1 person had to turn around at cocktail rock due to time constraints, 4 people headed down when the group decided to detour to Bluejay for a water refill. the Viejo Tie/Chiquito detour was cancelled due to time/fatigue.

all in all it was a great day with great people. glad we did this before the weather gets any hotter!

btw...

tom needs an award for newest bike on the trail! that trek 69er looked way cool. benhiemen and tapeworm both had VERY shiny new bikes as well (zion and kona).

there was lots of bling and 29ers. Aqua with the Jones, Allison's 1x1 was pink pimpin, all the Niner Bikes were rollin large (there were at least 5 of them, but no Tang ones).

i agree though... we need pictures. allison is moving a bit sluggishly today though. she is sore from all the booboos.

I think Keith has most of my carnage pics, but here are a few -

I had a run-in with a nasty tree/bush that had been cut down on a switchback.

Aqua crashed on the Cocktail jump

I fell on a loose rocky descent before the campground

Also landed on my face... left cheek was way swollen yesterday. Here are the 3 crashmeisters

The skin will grow back (I should have some nice scars again), but unfortunately this was rendered trash

And, my new best friend

BTW, ride report and additional photos forthcoming. I need to ice my face and leg and eat somethin'.

Ouch! I'm glad you guys are smiling. Aqua's crash looked bad, he ripped his jersey. Lot's of ice and advil for today huh? I think that Garmin is covered under warranty. Looks like a mfg defect to me ; ). Thanks for the photos.

haha! Yeah, I'm actually going to contact Garmin and see what it costs to have the screen replaced. The unit was still on and probably running. I haven't plugged it in yet. I should've left it on, but turned it off cause I didn't want it getting more ruined.

I think a few of us actually have photos of Aqua's crash also.

I hit an all time record and took 127 pictures but sadly I'm on dial up at home so the pic fest will have to wait until late tonight or Monday morning

Well, after riding Thursday night at SRP I was somewhat wondering what on EARTH I was thinking agreeing to ride San Juan on SS. It's been a lofty goal of mine from the time I first got my SS, but as time went by I just figured it would be something I'd never really do. But, thanks to Sauce's singlespeed insanity I agreed to ride SJ on my SS. Justin doesn't have a dedicated SS, but thanks to his Sir9 he turned it into a SS for the ride.

At first I thought we'd *maybe* have 6-8 people. We had about 14 Friday morning. By the time I got home Friday night we had around 20. By the time the entire group got to Cocktail Rock there were 24 of us. As Justin said, 5 people bailed before we went up to the campground. At the bottom of the trail/ride there were SIXTEEN single speeds! What kind of masochistic nut cases are we?!

Everything seemed to go okay at the beginning. Ian stopped on the climb to mess with chain links. Shortly after passing him I fell on my left side and slowly skidded down a switchback that, of course, had a bush that had been trimmed down. Lots of blood leaked out since my HR was about 181 to begin with. I doused it with water a few times and continued on. The next thing I remember was on the fun descent before the last rocky climb up to Cocktail.. Everyone was stopped. I thought it was a strange place for a regroup, but found out that the kid descending with no helmet had torn off Aqua's brake line. They thought they had figured it out, but after the break it didn't really work. He continued on, though.

We all got up to Cocktail (which didn't smell bad) and took a nice break. We went up to check out the jump. Mike decided he'd hit it on the Dirt Bag. I wasn't really ready for his jump, but it went super smooth. He just went by. Aqua decided to hit it, even though he was banged up from his Wednesday ride. It looked fine at first, but next thing I knew he was on the dirt with a cloud dusting up everywhere. Yikes.

I followed Mark down a particularly nasty rutted, rooty, rocky section. I'd never descended it before, but his line made a lot of sense, so down I followed and made it!!

All seemed to be going well. The climb up to four corners was warm. There were 2 flats on the way down the descent, but they all caught up. 4 people had to take the loop and return early, and the rest of us went up to the campground. It took awhile for the whole group to get up there, but we made it. I fell again on the way there and passed a really random, albeit well-built, drop kind of in the middle of nowhere. I had never assumed that people shuttled from that section, so it seemed really odd.

We descended from the upper trailhead and at the fork I fell again. On my face. We had all agreed that guys dug blood, but then added in that it was only to an extent

We all made it back to Cocktail before the final descent for another break. Sarah was bleeding from both knees, Aqua and I had plenty of injuries.. I stopped to take photos at the rocky switchback and didn't see 90% of the group until I got back down to the bottom. Rode with Keith, Andy and John most of the way, but Keith and Andy took off. I hung back with John, especially after his wicked crash in the loose stuff. We met up with Mike again on the lower switchbacks. He was walking out.

I made it to the parking lot and enjoyed a WONDERFUL Guinness.

Enough text. Let's seem some PICS!!

That's a big tool you've got there!

(Craig actually carries that around in his pack! Along with a foot pump)

Keith shows us a new way to clean techy sections

Sarah fell again on the way down from what I hear. She was covered in dirt dust at the bottom. At least we're still smiling

All in all, I still was able to enjoy the day. I won't be SSing San Juan every day, but I might do it once a year.

Thanks everyone who drove out! Had a good time. Nice to meet some new faces. Hope to ride with some of you guys again soon!

fun ride! everybody was a trooper, especially allison! that was a HARD ride. toward the end there i have to admit i was getting mighty grumpy (i wouldn't let myself eat, because it was too hot). but the downhill at the end was incredible and was totally worth it!

my first time at san juan was better than i thought! so pretty out there. even my crash was really fun, because i landed in a big, comfy pile of dirt! aqua said it felt like we were riding it a cat litter box ... good analogy!

steve/aqua is fricking awesome on a bike! and thanks justin for letting me follow your lines! all those cute bunny hops had me laughing. style! jose suddenly got way faster, and i could barely keep up with him! dude! you trying to kill me?! and jose was lugging beer up no less ... i so have bike envy right now.

great times! can't wait for the next str ride.

Nothing like a SS to put your skill level back in check!
I had a blast. You guys have an awesome time with your memorial weekend adventures and I'll be thinking about you while I'm on the boat two fisting beers!
Next stop: SART! on single-speeds!

Default Man this threads Huge!!!

Great to some some familer faces & meet some new peeps. Major props to all that rode SS. If I had some spare loot I'd be riding one too! Hopefully by the end of summer.
Very long day, but it seemed like it went by super fast. I need to scrape some pics together, have some of Steve hitting the dirt hard

Awesome effort by everyone, with only a few flats & that complete *** *** taking out Steve's front brake. He wasn't wearing a helmet either so he won't be around too long
Ben we gotta make the SART trip a whole weekend
