Default Snow Summit Scenic Sky Chair opens 5/26

It's almost time for some lift assisted trail riding in Big Bear!!! Hear's the scoop for 2007. Who's itching to ride???

Den Mother

The Scenic Sky Chair will open weekends only beginning May 26th then daily beginning June 16th.

Cross Country Mountain Biking Rates Adult
(Ages 13 & up)Child
(Ages 7-12)One-Way Ride (with bicycle)$10 $5All Day Pass (with bicycle) $20 $10
*Children 6 & under are free when accompanied by a paying adult
*Scenic Sky Chair rates do not include a bike rental
*Helmets are required for all mountain bike riders using Scenic Sky Chair

Only cross-country style bikes are permitted on the Scenic Sky Chair. No downhill specific bikes will be transported. Any one of the following four factors will disqualify a bike from being transported on the chair.

1. Bikes must be less than 35 pounds.
2. Designated tire size must be less than 2.5.
3. Front shock must have less than 6 inches of travel.
4. Bikes must have three chain rings unless they are single speed.

Snow Summit will no longer transport downhill specific mountain bikes on the Sky Chair during the summer months for either recreational or competitive purposes. The resort will continue to haul conventional (cross-country) mountain bikes for the public on the Sky Chair, with access to off-site Forest Service trails and roads. The resort has taken this action because of the liability exposure and forest damage from downhill bikes. Furthermore, there will be no more biking of any kind on the ski runs.

Do they ever let 2x9's up there? Or 1x9? My XC bike is a 1x9, but it's an 80mm soft tail 29er. So, I'd hope they would make an exception!!

They really don't enforce the three chainring rule. One of the times we were up there last year they checked our fork travel with a ruler and checked to see if our tires were designated larger than 2.5s (We had 2.4 Big Bettys). No weighing of bikes. I had my Intense Uzzi VPX, and I just lowered the fork with the ETA so it looked like I had about 4" of travel. No problems.

They had gotten really lenient at one point, and I saw guys with big bikes going up, but apparently the lift operators got yelled at by their boss (from what they told me) so they started paying more attention to what was going up.

You will have no problems with your 2x9 or 1x9. Even though the DH stuff is closed, there are still plenty of fun trails in the area. It's always nice to go up there when it's baking hot down here.

Sweet, thanks for the info! Maybe I'll take my Enduro then and just put the Talas down so it's about 5". The bike has a 2x9 and 2.35 tires. I climb on it as well. Though, hubby also climbs on his Socom, but I am not sure they'd let that through

I take my UK mates biking there - last summer they had a trough for the front tyre to fit into - if your tyre was too wide then its a no go for the chair lift.
The AE01 trail back down to the lake is singletrack bliss!

Interesting. I guess it just depends on the day you go.

According to the guidelines posted on their site, it says: Designated tire size must be less than 2.5, which to me means what it says on the sidewall of the tire.

Or maybe it's because you guys were running tyres instead of tires.

Last I heard Baldy was dead. USFS was giving them the run around with all the environmental reports.

I wouldn't waste my money or time driving up to SS anyway. Mammoth opens in June 23.

There is some excellent stuff in Big Bear you just have to climb/earn it to get it.

I love Mammoth but I like Tahoe more...Frank remember Tahoe August 4th-17th.

Too good for us, eh!! You will be missing out on some good riding. And you can go for the day and come home (saving lots of money on gas and eats). LOL.....We will have fun on your behalf!!!

At least the climbing comes after the chair lift.

We have some flyers at Adrenaline for the Mt. Baldy Mountain bike park. I think they are open.

They are open (weekends) and will take your bike up to the Notch. What they were trying to go and it seems like it is stalled, is open up some downhill runs and maybe a bike park.

If you have never been up there it is beautiful. Ride up from Manker Flats or put your bike on the lift and ride to Thunder Mountain or up to Devils Backbone. Good way to excape the summer heat and ride. Yes it is just fireroads but still very nice out there.

A lot can be swayed if you provide the kind lift operators with a 6-pack or some 420....

Last time I was there I just HAPPENED to have a cold 6-pack that I didn't want to carry around anymore! The kind lift operators seemed to turn a blind eye to my obviously illegal bike.
