(never mind doing about 30 mph hitting a nice jump on Blowhard falling 8' out of the air and crashing into a fence in Utah, i just got a broken hand from that) my worst injury was on the loop, a nice bell ringer which really screwed with my head for a while.
as of late i have been seeing so many people on expensive bikes with no helmet...if you can put 2k on a bike you can put 35.00 on your head
Thanks.

No doubt...wear a helmet!! I wear a Giro Xen and thank god i had it on. On the left outside temporal area of the helmet, there's almost no signs of damage, just a few small scuffs. Inside in that same area, the foam is cracked all the way through! The helmet did exactly what it is designed to do, dissipate the force of the blow throughout the foam, thus saving your noggin!
I'll be buying another one of those helmets, when I start riding again.

How do those bars look now? Carbon fiber has a nasty habit of exploding when it breaks. Are they still recognizable?
I don't think the first digger had anything to do with the bars, but ya never know. I'd say that I've had other previous falls that may have weakened them already and I just never inspected them or was aware of it.

I've also not seen the bars, b/c the bike is still at my friends house in fully. Really no desire to see it yet....

Cheers-
I have some lasting effects from related injuries (disk damage), but the actual fractures healed up fine. I was lucky in that respect, since it was mis-diagnosed and I was out trying to wash my car, etc,. less than 2 weeks later! No surgery required for yours? If I remember right, the doc told me that up to around 15% compression they would not do surgery, so I never had any.

I have Easton Monkeylight carbon bars on my bike right now, and I'm torn: I noticed some marks from the stem that were just enough to make me nervous, so I'm thinking about replacing them. I'd like to go with carbon again, more for the vibration damping than the weight, but I'm having second thoughts...especially after reading a story like this!

I feel your pain. I too have been a victim of "Da Loop". My second ride ever, after picking up this sport two years ago, resulted in a hard crash at the fully loop. Along with some nice dirt burns that needed to be scrubbed by the kind ER nurse I also seperated my left shoulder and broke my helmet. I was off the bike for a month. I agree with everyone, always ride with at least a helmet and never underestimate the trail. Hope your recovery is quick.

Man that blows, I feel for you. I compression fractured my T-spine last summer going over backwards on a wheelie as well (I don't ever try wheelies anymore).

healing vibes your way.

Hey Waldo - not sure about surgery or etc yet. I'm going in for MRI tomorrow. The doctor didn't give me any numbers or anything yet on compression percentages, he just told me to plan for a bunch of test tomorrow...great!
I'm glad your fractures healed nicely, but that sucks about the mis-diagnosis, although, I've heard it happens more then often we're aware of.

Easton Monkeylite XC lowrise is what I've been running and think they're great bars, but I'll be honest, I may reconsider when I get back on the bike.
Then again, maybe they should just be replaced more often, especially if you've had a couple of falls.

I'm sure this could be debated either way?

Thanks for the healing vibes(ditto to everyone). It does blow, but this is my first major damage, since I've been riding a mountain bike(many years), so I consider myself pretty fortunate and I guess the percentages of this happening were bound to get me sooner or later.

It's all good...

Ouch buddy...sorry to hear that! Been there and done that. Came down from 10+ feet of air directly on my left shoulder and tumbled down a 30-foot embankment/landing, my clavicle (among other things) was history! Still bugs me to this day in cold weather.

Before you know it, you'll be back on the rig. But maybe we could put some floaties on you, and perhaps a padded helmet?

Heal up well!

I would be happy to tow him around, but he has been off the bike for about a week now and boy has he put on some weight. The BOB does have a max weight limit you know!!!

Yeah - I may switch back to metal bars, though I do like the vibration damping of carbon. Interesting that many carbon bars offer lifetime warranties: Is this because they are that durable, or because they need to be replaced, or because the manufacturers can claim a lifetime warranty then counter that every failed bar they get was over-torqued or in some other way the warranty was voided?

burd - good luck with the MRI (always fun - I'm lucky I can sleep through 'em). Keep us posted on the prognosis.

Vibration damping is the exact reason why I use them and I think most people, as well.

Thanks Waldo. I'm interested in seeing what they say and what the images show tomorrow.

My opinion?

A good set of grips, or even gloves if you're into that sort of thing, will dampen more vibes than your bar. Plus, if you break a grip, you won't automatically go ass-over-elbows!
