Talking RR: Fullerton Loop - SS Trailer pull

A few Noob friends of mine wanted to get out and ride with me so I decided to take them to the loop. I figured to help me remember what it was like to ride the Loop for the first time and to give myself a challenge and I'd take out my son in his trailer with us. It was a great day temp wise and for the first mile I kept thinking to myself, "This is going to be WAY easier than than I worked it up to be. "

Thats when Lord decided to humble me.

I hear this Creek-chink-Pop. Uh-oh . I dismounted (much to the behest of my son's "FASTER-FASTER" chanting) a quick look and I found my punishment.

I was ticked, and I wasn't about to turn around and head home, so like a trooper I asked any passing biker if they had a chain tool. (Cause the hard core guy (me) has a Cheap tool )

After the fix I couldn't stand feeling my shifters cause it made me want to keep shifting so we dismounted and moved those in and after that we went on our way. This is where I gained a new respect for all the SS'ers. I had an absolute BLAST! yup you heard me. Some Full squish advocate stuck pulling his son (and his diaper / toy bag ) in one gear around the loop, and LOVING it .

All in all it was a great ride and my son now asks EVERY morning if he can ride in the "Bike Car" with Dad in the 'forest'.

OH! My son got one of those Fisher Price Digicams for christmas, So here are our pics of the ride.

Welcome to the dark side.

Since I live nearby, I often do a lot of beginner rides on the loop. To keep the loop interesting, I built up a singlespeed. Although a few years later, I still often find myself doing beginner rides on the loop, I still find the loop to be fun on the SS. And it gives my beginner friends motivation to try harder (especially one of my friends who was a gym rat, but had no energy to climb the hills on his gearie).

Right on, great story!

If and when I have a kid I'll be getting one of those trailers - looks like fun.

Nice report. love the pics/rr by your son.

what kind (make/model) trailer is that. We plan to look at some this weekend for my boy as well. Any friendly advise on what to look for and thoughts on the one you own?

thanks

I remember how my kids' heads just bounced around on our street rides. Your son must of had one heck of rumble riding behind you over the waterboards!

Did he make you push him on the swing? That swing in one form or another has been there since my 17 year old daughter started walking..........

My trailer is a Burley D'Lux From 2004. I have the Axle adapter that lets me use my trail bike. I really like our Burley and the fact that I got it for $200 dosent hurt either. If i had the $$ to do it again I'd have taken a serios look at the Chariot Carriors. Since '04 they have come out with some nice features. (ie: moderate suspension, ergonomic seat, padded harness, and Drum brakes.) They can also carry younger children. They're like the Lincoln's of kid carriers, and they're made by Trek. Either way it all depends on you kid and your abilities. I took my son on a few local rides around town to get hiim used to it, and I'd go down curbs to get him used to "bumps" and he does really good. I thought because he was quiet the whole ride he wasn't liking it. After speaking with the misses, she said he's only quiet when he's in awe. If you want I may be able to meet you at the loop in a few weeks and I'll show you how it works.

Great sounding ride. I think most ss'ers discover singlespeeding the way you did. So what kinda frame are you going to get? Ti? Steel? 26"? 29er? Do tell!!!

Credit still means you have to pay! But I agree with Rut, just buy one and work out the financing with your LBS.

Great RR!
We ended up rolling up a towel and making a head cushion for our kids in the trailer, although they never did the loop! I'm thinking I'll have to take my youngest there.

I'm thinking about another steed, But I'm in desperate need of a comuter. I'm on my wife's 15.5 inch Stumpy. And even that is on hold depending on my employment in the near future.

I'm thinking a Dad/Mom Trailer ride at the loop my be in order. But I'll need to stop and feed the ducks to keep my son happy And any one that dosen't have kids can come and we'll swap half way through!! HAHAHAHA
