Gone ridin'

If you're planning on riding Hurkey in the near future, don't expect the first climb up to Keen Camp to be nice like it used to be. They're felling a ton of trees, and when we were out there Sunday morning they weren't just knocked down, they were knocked down covering about 1/4mi of the climb right over the trail. Even once you get passed the hike-a-bike sections where the trees cover any semblance of trail you've got a fire road sized "trail", the surface of which is cut up tree limbs/small branches and loose silty dirt.
![]() Here's one section where the trees are piled up off the trail - ![]() However, the start of climb is fine - ![]() ![]() The top of the climb is fairly well blocked with tractors and other heavy machinery. Enjoy! The remainder of the meadow singletrack looks like it's seen some action next to it, and there's a fire hose stretching for about 1.5 miles or so along the trail, so they may end up bull-dozing even more out. The second climb is still as wide as a fire road, but at least it's fairly packed down. Exfoliator, Rage through the Sage, and the remainder of areas remain the same as last year. Luckily they were a blast, as usual. The meadow and the fire hose ![]() ![]() Does it end soon?? ![]() Fun! ![]() More climbing ![]() Looks like someone did some maintenance on the uber loose step sections. They weren't too bad. ![]() Nice sequence shot of me through the rockier section. I rolled a few rocks I normally avoid! ![]() Good ride that we hit up before hubby's sister's bday party up in Idyllwild. The cabin was at around 6670ft. Finally got a pick of the SS in the snow! ![]() Last edited by LBmtb; 09-02-2007 at 05:44 PM. |

Directionally Challenged

I remember about 8 years ago they did a similar thing. They had dozed a good portion of the trail and some people were complaining it was ruined, but by Sept, it was not bad at all and a lot of people liked it better that way. I personally would like it left alone.

Bummer about the trail damage. Because of all the dead trees from the bark beetle they needed to do it, better than loosing the area to wildfire. Alvin Meadows suffered the same fate last year...wonder how it looks now?
