Default RR: Crystal Cove, Laguna Beach

Before you all get your pantys in a wad about riding wet trails, this RR is about the Ocean side of the park not El Moro Canyon.

Since local dirt closed and had a couple hours of rare weekday ride time, I took off from my house and rode the paved walkways in the park. The 4 ramps that go down to the beach are very steep and a good little workout. There are a number of wooden steps that can be fun to go down and a real challenge to try to go up. Finished off by a quick hammer up Newport Coast Drive to the end of Ridge Park.

If you have family or friends visiting this summer you might want to check out the rental cabins at Crystal Cove.

And for you B-Rad The Beachcomber Cafe is not a bad place to take your girlfriend.

Simply beautiful area. Thanks for posting. I haven't been there in (obviously) way too long.

Yeah, it's nice. If you like the ocean and s**t.

Dean, you should get a cyclocross bike for rides like that. You'll have big, soft tires but you can go so much faster on the flats! It'd be fun!

Plus, chicks think guys on 'cross bikes are hardcore.

Okay, no they don't. I made that up. Only bike dorks like us will think you're hardcore. But, it's our opinion that counts. And, you don't have to wear lycra or anything. It's also hardcore to be a Fred. So, you're set!

Nice pics, though. I like the ocean and s**t like that.

I like my one-gear. Have to admit that two of the ramps too steep to single speed up in 32x18. I would put a smaller cog on the back before I bought another bike. I can change cogs as fast as fix a rear flat.

I ain't saying you have to give up the SS. Get a SS cross bike. C'mon, you know you want to try a new bike. Cogs are one thing, but new bikes, that's fun.

And, the hardcore thing? That didn't appeal? I mean, let's be honest, that's why you have a SS in the first place, right? To make people think you're 'core? Tell the truth, now. No one rides SS because it's *FUN*. It ain't. People SS to impress others. Seriously. And, dude, I'm totally impressed. I mean it. I wouldn't do that! It's hard!!! So, it works. Think how impressed I'm gonna be when you roll by on a SS 'cross bike!!! Daaaamn! Baadow!

Glen I split my time between gears and SS. When I first started SSing I was militant and elitist like you are describing. If I have gears I will be lazy, SS forces me to work a little harder. Not that I am fast...far from it, but I am faster on a SS than a geared bike.

Aw, Dean, I was just funnin'. You had to go and get all serious on me.

Mike told me the only reason guys buy singlespeeds was because they have, um, well, small genitals, and they were trying to compensate. I told him I wasn't sure about that, maybe some people just like the challenge but he assured me of it and said it's why he hardly ever rides his SS anymore.
