It's what hikers sometimes put on their hiking sticks to make noise so that they don't come around a corner and startle a bear.



There's a little magnet inside that sleeve, so when you leave the bell inside, it stays quiet. For biking use, it's nice to have the option of keeping it quiet in areas you may not need it, like long fireroad climbs with tons of trail visibility, otherwise the noise may drive you crazy.

I bought one at REI on Friday.
Works pretty well, except the magnet should be a little stronger/bigger- It rattled a bit when it should have been silent.
It was great to have on Fenceline/Missing Link and BVD today.
