It seems like there is only one thing you can count on in the VQ and that is not having perfect weather. It's either blazing hot, freezing cold, or windy. One year I was on the last climb to Santiago peak helping a friend fix a flat. He put his hemet down and the last we saw of it, it was headed toward Old Camp.

...and watch out for number plate 423- it's my dad and he's 65 y.o. this year (shortly after the coup, actually) and planning on pounding this thing out! cheers will be appreciated for him. The training's been going well for him, and a 20 miler w/ 4k elevation isnt too much of an issue, so he should do rather well!

Forecast for Saturday is 70, with a low of 50....I'm hoping!!! That means the snow will melt before then, right???

Sarah, we'll miss you out there, but it is best to heal than further damage your knee. I've seen a LOT of people that thought they could just work through it and end up with surgery at a young age (some 14-16 yrs old). Hope you recover soon!

I think it means you will have some snow on The Main Divide on the backside of Santiago Peak. (Usually after the first switchback.)

Maybe a couple hundred yards or so. Not worth worring about.

Best of luck to everyone! You will have a blast.

Serge, I remember seeing you down there last year. I was with George and Del. I'll be there this year as well, I'll keep an eye out for ya.

There was snow and ice in the shadows on the back of Santiago peak last year. Looks like its a tough call between knee and leg warmers!

Bummer Sarah, but Shinken and Padre speak the truth. I've had 2 knee operations myself and know that you gotta take any knee discomfort with care. Hey I like to SSpeed and think it's great for my knee, but I turn a low ratio 33:21 and stretch as often as a I can.

Like Padre said, if it's IT-band syndrome, that can be a total biatch to get under control. My old riding buddy let it go for awhile. Then overtrained doing a 24hour race, a week of backpacking, and then a bunch of 5 hour rides in the Santa Anas during a 6 week period. Last I checked he hasn't been back on the bike yet and was talking about surgery. It maybe just inflammation from overtraining but I hope you were able to get it checked out and you are on the mend.

Default Question about support

Quote from the packet "Any participant requesting either food or water from support crews will be penalized by 30 minutes in their finishing time." {This is after a description of the two Aid Stations.}

But crews have had water and goodies sitting out, notably at Four Corners, top of Horsethief, and top of Trabuco. Will the water and goodies disappear? Or do we just steal them without asking?

If the ride is postponed to March 17th it better start at 6:30, otherwise DST will add another HOUR of darkness!

Just got down from Modjeska Peak. There was a fair amount of snow. I went up Harding and the snow started at Laurel springs (but not much there). The trail had a good covering of snow up higher, maybe 1/2 of an inch or so in spots. Wish I had a camera it was a nice day to be up there.

Be interesting to see what's left by Saturday but I imagine there will only be some puddles from the melted snow by then.

There will be plenty of food and water at the aid stations. They just don't want you to take the supplies they have reserved for emergencies. Just make sure you pick up everything you need at the official aid stations and you will be OK.
