My sister lives up off of Glen Ranch and said there were a bunch of search n rescue vehicles there today.
The only news they know of is the guy who went missing at the beginning of December. Anyone know of anything? Did they ever find that guy? Is someone else missing? How DO you get lost at Whiting? According to the only news I could find, the guy went hiking without anything (like his cell), and bloodhounds had followed his scent to Whiting.

I was there today. I did see a search & rescue helicopter for a minute, but nothing strange. Trail is in great shape. I haven't been there in a while and there's been a lot of work done out there.

Strange you mention this, I did a quick loop of Whiting to the Luge and back yesterday morning and chatted with some deputies on bikes by the memorial on Santiago Canyon Road.
The story is that the walker missing since December 5th happened to take his .357 along......the officers are pretty sure it was a suicide hike. The gentleman in question had also been giving things away a few weeks before he dissappeared. We had been told that the trails would busy with search and rescue folks, they were not kidding. So we went up the pavement climb to get onto the STT, made it to the first left turn and there were 2 deputies on the trail and about a dozen more below in the bush with dogs. Curiosity required we stop and see what was going on. The dogs, called cadaver dogs by the handler, had picked up a "scent". As we were standing near the ledge watching them work my buddy Scott points to the north of where we were standing and says, " hey, isn't that a blue shirt over there?". The deputy standing by us radioed down, all the brown shirts took a right hand turn and headed that way. Needless to say there was a blue shirt down below us to our right and it wasn't alone...I'll let you imagination fill in the sleeves, neck line and waistline or I hate to say, lack there of any appendages.....you could not see it clearly and we were not going to go investigate but the deputy told is would be best to "move along now", which we did. The rest of the ride was pretty somber after that. If that was the missing walker, he was pretty far from where they thought he went missing. If it was someone else, it makes me feel even worse.

Hey TK and Guero,
It was pretty sureal. What I found so strange was how the deputies told us the "police theory" of what had happened, I did not know they could discuss that stuff. Then to watch all those people searching and then see something that did not seem quite real was disturbing. It is still bugging me today.

After starting a reply several times, I can only say that I'm at a loss of words.

On saturday morning about 7.45am I saw 2 cops putting on backpacks jsut by the gate where you come out of Whiting to cross Santiago Canyon - I wondered what they were up to and now I know.
So did the guy top himself and then get eaten by animals or jsut get eaten by animals?
