Default RR: Chantry Flats and Beyond! 12-31-06

Sorry for the delay, it's been a busy day!
As Mike said we had a big group of 11 show up with perfect weather. I think there were only 3 who had been there previous so for the rest of us it was an adventure.

The trail was pretty fast with a few surprises, I found a spot I called the "pygmy leaf trap" and we were fairly crash and carnage free in the beginning.
Here are some pix of the guys rolling around a corner, what I liked was how everyone was smiling all through the ride!

Here's a couple shots of the view on our way up and a pit stop. The pace was pretty mellow which was great because as Mike said, on the way up to Zion it was pretty steep, reminded me of the Holy Jim switchbacks but some of the stuff was tough to clear, I was doing my far share of walking

Once we got to the top we regrouped, had a snack, talked about "guy stuff" and thought we were hearing a human sacrifice going on from a huge group of hikers....then got ready for some well earned downhill!
Props to Mark, Adam and Dell for the killer pace on the way up, these guys were goats!

a little group meeting up top

Aldo showing his true feelings

Howard and Alan making it to the top. Howard was our first crash with a "off the trail tumble into some brush with his bike still attached" crash. I am waiting for that pix to be emailed to me, that means you, Alan!

another view

Like Mike said, we had quite a little session on the tight double switchback at the bottom. My buddy Gabe blew through it - I hate him - and Mike was the next to clean it. I'll let the pix do the talking on this one....

Gabe rolling thru!

Look at that smile! Mike did a great job cleaning that switchback!
As luck would have it, or not, the carnage came after that. As we were all enjoying the downhill, Alan had a close encounter with the trail and his bike careened off into a ravine. Unfortunately he was riding near the back and only Rob and Howard were there to help. His bike went down a ravine and was hanging by its seatpost on a branch, 10 feet below. Rob, Howard and Alan then had to form a 3 man chain to lower themselves to retrieve the bike.
The aftermath was nasty roadrash, a cracked helmet, some scratches on the frame and a missing camera that was quickly found...I think he was lucky.

That pavement climb out was a killer and magically my lame XTR front derailluer would not shift, Yes I brought my Yeti with gears and suspension and it was nice!!, so up I went in my middle ring...holy crap did that suck!
Thanks Mike for letting us know where we were and Adam, Mark, Dell, Aldo, Rob, Howard, Alan, Tin and Gabe for making it a great ride!
I wore my helmet cam for most of the trip so once I load it to YouTube I'll post the link, it turned out perfect!
The trail was fantastic and I can't wait to hit it again.

There is a rumor this same group is hitting the San Juan Trail next Sunday?? I am in!!!

Glad you guys had a blast out there. That area is truly a gem.

CORBA will be out working on the Mt. Zion Trail for the last time next Sunday, January 7th. There is a bit more work before the trail is done. You guys should come out and lend a hand. It's always a blast. A few of us ride the whole loop with trailers full of tools, at least 15 pounds of extra gear.

The first Sunday in February we will be doing a BBQ fun ride out there to the Grand Opening of the trail if you will.

The only frown I had was going up that pavement road at the end in my middle ring !
That trail was a total blast, except for the pygmy leaf trap!!

Got a few more pix from the camera that sampled the terrain....Alan's camera he dropped during his crash. Fortunately they are both o.k.

Picture perfect!

Beautiful view!

Howard checking out the local bushes!!

One of the many trails!

San Juan can wait. Come ride Chantry with us and play in the dirt. It's a blast and very rewarding.

Sorry this Sunday...trail work day on Zion...I will be there Brian. I like the feeling of riding a trail that I helped work on.
