Today’s contestants for the Nobel Pain Prize: Andy, Annie, Russ, Jose, Jeff, Justin and I.
Cold early start at Cooks Corner this morning but it soon warmed up once we hit the Harding grind. Jeff and Justin set off like Lance Armstrong after a milkshake from Floyd Landis. Russ and I tried to catch them but after a 40min flat out chase up the steepest bit of Harding they had us beat. Great views from Harding - really clear. Soon as we hit the downhill part of Harding towards 4 corners my freehub started making grinding noises Rebuild required. I told Jose I'd show him what real power was so after he stopped to help me track down the screeching freehub noise I let him have it up to 4 corners, solid pumped leg muscles all the way – Jose loves the pain! Views at 4 corners were really impressive although sat still it got cold really quickly even in the sun. Andy was still sick and really suffering today – in fact later in the ride his nose started bleeding from the exertion - OMG! Upper HJ was a total blast – everyone seemed to love it. It could do with some sweeping but its still one of the most fun trails around. Annie ended up stuck in a bush, we missed that bit but lets hope Andy has a photo of that to post I thought Jose was joking when he said he was going to ride the drop from Main Divide onto lower Holy Jim – clearly not. His front end washed out over a rock and he managed to hit both legs, head and wrist on the ground. Muchos bloody legs pain followed. Jeff and Justin rode down the rock shelf on Lower HJ – I’d never attempted it before but couldn’t let them get one over on me and rode it for the 1st time J Jeff may or may not have considered turning his bike into a singlespeed but either way Justin decided he’d lend a helping hand by riding over a large stick that flew off into Jeff’s rear derailleur snapping it clean in two and sending the tangled remnants into the spokes. Nice shooting Justin! Jeff’s new singlespeed gearing might need some work - 22:20!! Eventually the chain tightened up leaving Jeff to run with his bike for the last few miles – nice bit of cross training. Using O’Neill to avoid the Live Oak road wasn’t as easy as we thought as the trails had all been graded – short steep climbs in soft deep sand. Not what you want after 33miles but the last few miles flew by after we’d all got the notion to hit ‘In & Out Burger'. I had no idea a burger could taste that good! We only made it back to the car with 30mins of daylight to spare – Looooooooooooooooong ass epic ride!! When Andy recovers I'm sure he'll post up the pics

Tough ride for me today, I was not in the best of health. Thanks to everyone for waiting on my snail's pace. Harding was great, first time up the trail and I didn't realize how beautiful it was. The weather was cool and UHJ was incredible. Here's the photo album: http://www.socaltrailriders.org/gallery/showgallery.php/cat/613
Highlights Trailhead Ann taking a look back First Rest Stop Santiago Peak Jose needing a brake adjustment Jeff decending UHJ Jose's leg after a tumble Check out that rear derailleur! Last edited by Sprockethead; 12-10-2006 at 07:34 AM. |

Aside from the broken derailler great ride guys.I love long adventures like that.Makes things interesting. Thanks for navigating us through Live Oak and getting us out successfully keith.U also forgot to mention the guy that got a shuttle ride up to the top of Harding in a helicoter.Landed right there at 4 Corners.Holy Jim was a blast from top to bottom.Jose tried to go down and clean that rock section you climb from Holy Jim to Main Divide.Jose you are a crazy mofo.Thought he was goin to the hospital for sure.Anne and Andy you guys are warriors for toughing it out with a cold.Nice seein russ out there again too.btw I just won a new frame off ebay that I've been watching for a couple days.Singlespeed here I come.Looks like I may join the singlespeed club of Justin and Jose for VQ.bring on the pain.

Martial arts bad-ass or not, someone needs to have a talk with Jose. First he's checking out Andy's girl in pic #4 (he's not the only one), then he tags the building up on the peak. That's just not right.
I don't want to say he deserved that crash on that wimpy section but... C |

Damn my legs were sore today - the ripping pace at the start of Harding and the last mile at full tilt took their toll for sure. I was so tired last night that everything I typed made no sense - I blame that on Jose for snaffling half my water
I'll be up for another training epic come Jan 6th 2007 ![]()
