I need a tow truck ASAP

Thanks to El Boracho for suggesting this ride, we had a good turnout of 12 riders. It was El Boracho, Tom the Bomb, dukethenuke, bananaseat, MTBracer, CalEpic, mcgrath, Von Diggity, Spookydave, Ladd Jasper, tkblazer and myself. We met up at 8am at the Candy Store then shuttled up to Blue Jay. I have done Chiquito and Viejo Tie before but we climbed up from the bottom of San Juan when we did that. By the time we got to Chiquito we were all very tired that time so this time was much more enjoyable for those of us who did that ride last time.
Things started off with Diggs getting a flat less than a mile into the ride. Fixed that up and then MTBracer slid out in a turn and broke his rear der hanger Luckily he had a spare and got it fixed pretty quickly. Made our way to Viejo Tie and we all stopped at the 1st big boulder roll. A few of us did the roll, first was dukethenuke, then CalEpic, Ladd Jasper, myself and then came mcgrath's try. Well not sure exactly what happened but he ended up doing a big endo and went down hard on his head/shoulders. Somehow he managed only to get a few scratches thankfully! You get an A for effort on that one Pat!!! Pat would eventually go down again a couple miles later and ripped the strap on his camelback Once again he was ok (although I'm sure he'll be a little sore tomorrow) Then Diggs got another flat.....one word buddy, STANS ![]() We started the hike-a-bike section of Chiquita after the waterfall turnoff. Seemed to ride much more of this than last time due to A. not being so damn tired and B. riding my 6 Pack this time instead of the Burner. The 6 Pack was sooooooo much more enjoyable on this trail. We stopped and did the caterpillar rock roll and took some pics there as well. Nobody crashed on that one. Craig and Steve have a few pics they took on the rock rolls, I forgot my camera for this ride This is a ride we must do again, it is a tiring ride despite being a shuttle but much more enjoyable than climbing up from the bottom. Having energy for Chiquita makes for a much more fun descent. Topped off the ride with some Bad to the Bone BBQ, very tasty stuff! Great ride today everyone! |

EDIT - TurneRob and I posted at the same time so I merged the threads.
We had a great ride today. 12 of us showed up: Tom C, Aldo, Dell, Rob, Pat, Nam, Mike, Frank, Matt (Diggity), Steve, Dave, and myself. Right off the bat Matt flats and Frank busts off a derailleur hanger. Luckily spares were exchanged and we were rolling. Viejo Tie and parts of Chiquito were pretty overgrown and most of us kept our armor on for protection. We ran into Mike who had done a ton of brushing on Chiquito and those sections were awesome. Thanks again Mike! My vote for crash of the day goes to Pat. Our boy charged the Viejo Tie boulder roll with gusto and did an incredible endo. I swear he was vaulted 5 feet in the air and into a bush. It was scary at the time. Now it's just funny Unfortunately it wasn't captured on video but I think Steve might have a pre-endo pic. This is a very fun, technical ride. I can't wait to ride it again I took 4 pics and they are all of the roll on Chiquito. Rob rolling ![]() Dell Rolling ![]() Steve Rolling (Notice Dell and I are in perfect spotter synch) ![]() Moi ![]() We capped off the ride with some Kick Ass BBQ. Thanks for setting this up Mike. Thanks for the turn out on this one everybody. Can't wait to do this one again. I'm gonna start practicing my gymnastic dismounts for the viejo tie boulder, we all got takin to school on that one. I like your moves Pat, I'll give that dismount a 9.5 easy. While everyone was off taking their glamour shots on the caterpillar, Dave, Frank, Pat and I found some 15ft hucks, sorry no pics. Until next time, good night and good luck.
BTW Aliso was fun too. I think I'll eat three pork sandwiches next time though, just to make sure.

Yup, my endo was pretty scary. looking at my picture compared to digg's I think I could have been back a little more. I'm not sure what happened, I don't remember pulling the brake-who knows. Like I said on the trail, this crash didn't hurt at all, it was the second one that got me. I must have launched 5 ft or so into the trees/bushes. Thanks to Aldo and Mike for helping me out there. All in all though, I had a great time. Definitely want to give this one another shot. Next time I'll own the boulder. Still happy I attempted. Oh, and "bad to the bone BBQ" was damn good. It's good enough to warrant a trip down just for the food. |

great ride today guys! i must have dabbed at least 10 times on chiquita but no crashes
It was good meeting all of you crazy mofo's today and i'm up for a return trip if it ever happens.mcgrath, your rock and roll spot was freakin awesome. You came in hot and looked good on the roll until you got to the other side and launched into the air.

great ride report guys, nice pix too! i've been out of the loop the last two weeks but will be back next week!!!
how difficult is that boulder roll? is it similar to the roll on trail X? from what i remember watching some other guys hit it, it looks like you kind of have to attack the front side of the boulder then quickly shift your weight to the back. |

Quote:
The boulder roll on Viejo Tie isn't as steep as the trail X roll really. It is more challenging in the fact that you need to get your line set up perfectly and keep your balance perfect as well. You need to get enough speed going to get up on top of it, then shift all your weight back quickly and scrub enough speed so you don't pull a mcgrath ![]() |

First rule of BBQ Joint: Don't talk about BBQ Joint.
Just kidding it's off Rancho Viejo Rd. in San Juan Capistrano. Go right at light and left at the liquor store, and yeah that place is the shiot!
