Jose, you are so hostile lately! What's up? Maybe you need a girl, too. I mean, you're hatin' on roadies, people who read, Turners. You have a lot of aggression. Maybe you should rub one out or something. Or buy a book about road bikes (that you so obviously secretly love).

If Skyline Park is open, then you can add in the uppermost portion of the Mt. Wilson Trail. It takes off from the parking lot inside the park and dumps you out at the Toll Road/Mt. Harvard junction.

For what it's worth, I read somewhere that the landslide on the Toll Road is now passable. It's still there, but supposedly you can hike over it. I imagine that the road is still officially closed, and I don't know if the pedestrian gate at Pinecrest is locked or not. It's worth looking into, though, as the Toll Road is definitely the best way to do this ride as a loop. Otherwise, Lower Merrill to Mt. Lowe fireroad to Eaton Saddle and on up the pavement would work.

I prefer to park near the bottom of the Mt. Wilson Trail, at Mira Monte Park (corner of Mira Monte and Mountain Trail in Sierra Madre). This way you get the pavement ride over at the beginning and finish on a nice downhill note. The route over to the Mount Wilson Toll Road is actually a little over five miles: Head west on Mira Monte to Baldwin - Left on Baldwin – Right on Sierra Madre – Right on Sierra Madre Villa – Straight on New York – Right on Altadena – Right on Crescent – Right on Pinecrest. If the Toll Road isn't an option, then it's only another 2-1/4 miles over to Lower Merrill (just continue west on Altadena Drive and turn right onto Lake Ave.). In my opinion, it's not really worth the hassle of leaving cars at both trailheads. It's a pretty easy cruise across town.

Last time I rode it, the uppermost section of the Mt. Wilson Trail singletrack, between the Skyline Park parking lot and the Toll Road/Mt. Harvard junction, was in pretty good shape. This section is usually very brushy, but at that time it was all passable. The next section, from the Toll Road to the Upper Winter Creek/Mt. Wilson Trail junction, was in fine shape – great flow and lots of fun! Continuing on down to the first stream crossing, the trail was very rough, requiring three or four dismounts. Heading down to Orchard Camp, the trail was in great shape, as was the rest of the trail on down to Sierra Madre. The section near First Water was re-routed a few years ago and is a definite improvement. There is some PO here and there, but it was easily avoidable. Based on MTBRacer's report, it sounds like the current conditions are similar to what I experienced last time out.

Any bike will do. I've always found the ride to be plenty fun on a hardtail.

Jim thanks for the report. If I get some time this week I will explore climbing Wilson Toll Road from the bottom.
