Default RR: Mammoth Trip Aug 2006

I guess I'll start things off.

Thursday morning Vonskipp and Calepic picked my ass up, followed by Ladd Jasper. Later we met painfreak and all headed out. We stopped a few times, and decided to start off the trip at Lower Rock Creek Trail. We shuttled this 8 mile run and man was it great. All flowing singletrack with some pretty cool tech sections all along the way. And very rocky, hence the name. Had a cold one at the truck and continued on our way to mammoth. What a great start for the trip.

We got to our condo around 3:00 i would say, and took Skipps advice on heading out for another shuttle ride. I'm not sure what the trail was called but it started off nicely. The first three miles were Downhill wooded singletrack. We went on for another four miles or so of fire road descent, and we finally realized with the sun setting behind us that we missed a turn and things started to get sketchy. We ended up climbing back up the fire road to the missed turn, only to find that we took another wrong turn. Eventually after a lot more climbing, no water, and very little light, we got on the right track. Headed down more single track to our cabin. We even pondered spending the night in the woods. Yikes.

Friday and Saturday were both bike park days, of non stop downhill fun. We met up with Jeff who led us down some great runs. My favorite being Flow to Shotgun. Only disadvantage to this is that you had to hop on the shuttle back to the lodge and then catch the gondola up again. But it was worth the few times we did this ride. We rode the Velocity trail quite a bit, with some ladder and log crossings in the mix. Another very cool trail was shock treatment where there were many steep ladder sections and very loose soil. I guess it made for some soft landings. I wouldnt know as I was to weak to try the ladders. Maybe next time.

We rounded things out with another shuttle down lower rock creek sunday. A great way to end the trip. Thanks to everyone that made it a great time. And especially Matt K for organizing the whole deal.

Guys I'm really jealous, but at the same time I'm kinda glad I didn't go because my legs were so achey over the weekend I didn't ride at all so I would have been hurting up there. Keep the pics coming though! Any chance there will be another trip up there next month?

Default Mammoth riding

That was a great weekend of riding up there. It was great hooking up with all you STR guys for a few days. Thanks for letting me tag along. Scott, Ian, and I went back up to the park again on Sunday and abused ourselves some more. Scott washed out on a burm and skinned himself up a bit. I was able to keep it on two wheels at least.
I don't know about you guys but this morning I am a little sore all over. I don't know if it is from my nosedive or just from being pounded on the mountain for three days. It is most likely some of both. My pinkey is getting better but is still purple and swollen and a bruise showed up on my thigh. My coworkers are getting a kick out of my messed up finger. They can't understand why I would want to ride a bicycle down a steep rocky trail. They think I am crazy. (Of course I think the same thing about them.) I'm glad to hear that you guys found Mike eventually and had another good ride Sunday. I'll look forward to hearing more reports.
Thanks again, Jeff.

Jeff - Thanks for showing us around. It was great meeting you guys. I'll look you up when I make it to Kernville. There's a nice pic of Scott launching on DC 10 in my gallery or a smaller version of the pic in the Mammoth teaser post.

Awesome pics guys, looks like you guys had a blast. It sucks that I had to miss this trip. Any pics of that log drop at the end of Velocity?

The big log drop? - None of us hit that. The landing was way too sketchy - off camber and way loose.
