I'd rather be climbing...

Default RR: Dehydrafest '08-CHSP 09-07.

Good time out there with everyone today. Why, oh why, did we choose to start @ 3pm? The first few miles felt like we were riding in a stuffy, smog-filled sauna. Luckily, it was nice and cool by the end of the ride. Pulling back to the cars @ 7:15 or so, with a nice breeze in your face, really made up for the sweltering heat. We were able to avoid most of the trails that are still overgrown. As with any CHSP venture, you have to break up your single track fun with a few miles of fire road & a load of climbing. I think Sam said the finals numbers were 18+ miles & 3000' of climbing? I'm sure he'll jump in & give the more exact numbers.

It was nice riding with good peeps that I had not seen in a while (Sam & Chewy--slow, as always) & even better getting to meet some new ones. I'd list all the names, but I know I'd butcher the nickname of the fellow Gaucho I met. So, David, Mark & fellow Gaucho...damn good to meet ya.

Now to the pics...

Chewy showing off on the climb up to Bane ridge

Fellow Gaucho coming down Bane...

Mark coming down Bane..

Chewy--he's pretty fast (going DOWNhill, at least). No fingers on the brakes...impressive.

Sam...

Fellow rigid rider David..

The one crash of the day. Biker vs. tree. Tree won. Warrantied helmet?

Sam on Bovinian...about to come to a screeching halt @ the crash site...

More Bovinian...

Fixing one of the numerous flats @ 4 corners...

Sam finishing Sycamore...

The added weight of gears & suspension slowed everyone else down. Us smarts ones, however...

Second rest stop @ 4 corners...and more flats to fix...

Still loopy after the crash...

Chewy, mid-loogie. Sorry ladies, he's spoken for...

Good times! If I got any of the names wrong, slap me.

dude, there's still a red mark on my throbbing head, guess you guys weren't lying. My camera is in the car and that's a long walk across the lawn. This one was one those rides that makes me walk funny afterward. Good meeting everyone and I would definitely ride there again as soon as possible.

This is a family forum. Please refrain from phrases like "throbbing head".

Good to meet you, David. Hope you feel better. Slug down some Advil & drink some agua.

CHSP, while mostly fire road, is still one of my favorite places to ride when I don't the time or inclination to drive far.

Man... lack of sleep and eating like crap all finals week kicked my butt.

I was kinda dogging up some of the hills at the end. Glad you guys didnt leave me for the bobcats and mountain lions.....

Had a killer headache when i got home. I need to ride more.

MY gps edge 205 said 3500' and 18 miles. I dont believe the 3500' number tho.

Here is the route overlay on google earth.

Great ride with some great people!

dude... max speed is 43.6 mph
I knew i was on the verge of beefing it down the bitches

and.... i have a message for san juan hill. "Screw you..."

that altitude discrepancy is probably from the side-mountain effect. 205 doesn't have a barometric altimeter, so it relies on GPS data from one side of the other of the trail for an elevation. kinda screws with the total a bit.

and damn, 43.6mph is hauling, especially on one of those flexy-wheeled 29er things

My GPS said 18 miles and 2921' of climbing. I had a great time out there. At first the heat and a big lunch were killing me and I thought about bailing as we climbed Southrdige. But I really hit my stride when we were climbing up to San Juan Hill. From there I had a blast and I felt pretty strong.

I'll post my pics tomorrow.

BTW, the fello Gaucho was Eric.

Bummed I couldn't make it but I'd been riding all weekend and my wife was having none of it. Still managed to get 50 in yesterday.

We climbed, with no shade anywhere, up many a fire road

with smiles a mile or two in

then we took breaks

then climbed some more

and took more breaks

Then we rode down the hill where I met a tree branch with my helmet

took this moment to recover and fix a flat and enjoy the shade

Then we climbed some more and nearly ran over this dude

At some point we flew down some long fireroad and a really fun singletrack or two

and took more breaks...

Synchronized pissing? someone caption this photo...

photo-op, then back to the cars

my left knee and hip hurt pretty good but otherwise, good times

The one tree you got close to beat you down. Imagine if the fire roads had trees around them for shade...they would have destroyed you David.
