Awesome day on the mountain today. After first climbing up Uptown to the Gondola, Stinkyrider and Happy Gilmore saw me and recognized me from pictures. They ended up joining our OTB crew for the day.
We had some amazing runs, sessioned lots of sections. We also met Andy, Steppie, Lynne and gang and did a run down Chainsmoke and Twighlight Zone with them. Good times. We also met Winston from STR, and a we didn't see a few other STR folks we knew were here. The mountain was surprisingly empty. The lines were never out the door at the Gondola, and wind was strong (50 MPH gusts at the top). I was literally blown off the trail by a gust on Velocity, and almost knocked sideways off the jump at the bottom of Velocity. Through the day we rode Chainsmoke, DC10, Twighlight Zone, Off the Top, Shock Treatment, Follow Me, Velocity, Uptown, Bullet, Brake Through, Flow, Shotgun.... I crashed several times today.... I'm sure there will be embarrassing/funny crash shots posted of me, at some point in the near future...I cleaned the second rock garden on Chainsmoke, and nobody saw me. So I headed back up for a re-run and crashed twice with all the eyes and cameras on me. I did, however, go back and redeem myself for a third clean run. Pretty funny stuff. The new bike is very much at home at mammoth Some of these pics are by El Presidente and some are mine. I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking Why it's called Mammoth (Stinkyrider): ![]() El Pres and Ed: ![]() Shock Treatment Ladders (Me): ![]() Ed: ![]() DC10 Rock Garden (Me): ![]() Chainsmoke Drop: ![]() Chuck: ![]() Me: ![]() ![]() Happy Gilmore: ![]() Andy, Chainsmoke: ![]() Ed, Skid Marks: ![]() El Presidente, Chainsmoke: ![]() Happy: ![]() There were many other cameras going today, and I'm looking forward to seeing the results. We're planning to ride tomorrow as well, but the weather is forecast to turn pretty cold, even with a chance of snow at high elevations in the evening. Could get interesting. Cheers.

I will post some pics up when I get home. I am having to go to the coffee shop for internet access. Wind seems to be stronger today. After riding the bike park most of the day we took Paper Route to Juniper to Lake and came back to town on Mammoth Rock Trail...highly recommend for the x-Country riders like me.

Yeah, it's windy. The sensors are reporting average of 65 MPH wind at the summit, with gusts nearing 80. Temp is 38 degrees. Looks like a brisk morning... heading out now!

Have fun and hope the winds calm down for you. Two weeks ago it was 39deg at the summit so that temp. seems pretty common. But one day (when I took the kids to the top for lunch) it was nice and calm. Perfect riding conditions. Next day (the day I rode of course), it got somewhat windy with avg. of about 35mph. Still a great day for riding, but a huge contrast from the prior day. R |

j/kSeriously though... thanks for the RR and awesome photos. I have MTB destination envy! Mammoth has gone from a 'whatever' to a 'must ride' over the past few RRs i've seen. I'm hoping to make it up there for closing weekend. Have fun today and a safe drive home, all of you.

Nice pics of the Shock Treatment ladders. I always "pucker up" when I get to that part. How was Twilight Zone? I've been waiting 2 years for that run to open. I guess I'll find out when I get up there next weekend.

Day two: Day two got a bit disorganized. Some riders got up there early and caught the gondolas first runs, then an hour later they shut it down for the rest of the day. So it was bus shuttling the lower stuff for most of the day.
Wind was gusting 95 at the top, but most of the lower mountain the temperature was in the 60's or so, not too bad, unless you were wet and sweaty and had some wind chill going. At times there was so much traffic on Downtown that it was a pain to get past the slower riders. We still had a good time, and managed some runs down the lower parts of Flow, Bullet, Shotgun. We ended up splitting into smaller groups and others will give their reports later. I didn't take too many photos, but I got a great one of MTB-Prodigy, Nick: ![]() Scott on his maiden ride on a new Golden Willow: ![]() Much more to come! Hopefully tomorrow the gondy will be running and it won't be another day of bus shuttling..... ![]()
