Thumbs up Oaks - It Was Freak'n HOT!!

So, CPATCRASH and I hit up Oak's this morning for the Sunday Path Ride.
We parked at the back of peter's to get in a little more pedaling, than just parking at the shopping center.
There were a lot of cars parked back there, which ended up belonging to all of the hikers we came accross riding through the park. No problems at all. I still can't figure out why they have to walk four accross the fireroad though.

Over at Oaks, we reached the start of the first B and Pat notices some hiker's going UP El Camino.

Pat
"Why don't we ever climb that"?
Me
"because it's a little steep and loose"
Pat
"ok, never mind"
Me
"aw, come on, let's go give it a shot"!

Did I mention it was starting to get HOT by now?

El Camino, now known as Peralta Hill's.

I don't ride it in the right direction very often, since it turns off of the top of B #2.
I've only tried to climb it once or twice before.
Today reminded me why I don't climb it!

Pat starts up what will soon become part hike-a-bike!

Steep, and loose!

Pat telling me why nobody show's up to join me on The Path Sunday ride's.

It roll's out nice for about a second in the middle, then a nice short downhill, that leads to THIS!!

Pat gives it a try...

"Why am I riding with you again"?

Relentless!!

OK, my turn.

I've got my fork wound down!

Ready...set...go!

STALLING!!

And giving it another shot!

I didn't make it much farther.

The new trail sign at the top show's the "correct" direction to ride this trail.

Go towards the arrow next time DUMMY!

From there we went on up the thrid B to the top, hit the FUN downhill along the ridge, and dropped on down Chutes.

By this time I was overheating, so I suggested heading back to the car's, and heading towards Tustin Brewery, where I knew a big COLD pitcher of ICE TEA would be waiting for me.

All told, we did right around 13 miles, and 1561 feet of climbing.

Not too bad on a 39lb bike!

Oh, I forgot to mention that I was riding my Stinky!

I'd been riding my Dawg and my hardtial so much that it was time to get the big bike out and show it some luv!

I felt a little guilty though. By the time we got to the drop's, I was on my way to overheating, and road right by without hitting it once!

Next time!

Good ride Darin. Riding with you is always an adventure, even if it's a short one.

Dude, I can't even imagine getting a 39lb bike up Peralta Hills in the REVERSE direction... I know that one section that looks like a WALL!

Then again I was pretty dumb myself... I started in the same place you did (bottom of Peters), rode up to the Oaks and started up the B's... I turned off on Bumblebee (the section that parallels the 2nd B) and when I got to the top, saw the new trail marker for Grasshopper and decided to try that one. So I took that one down to the bottom and made the mistake of trying to ride back UP it rather than go back to the bottom of the B's again. I knew I'd have to HAB up that one section with the stairsteps but I way overestimated myself with that sun bearing down on me.. LOL Anyways, I eventually made it to the top of the B's and then back down Chutes/Zips or whatever you call it.

Nice RR Darin!

Where does Peralta Hills start?

I often see other riders come in from the left, between B#2 (past the picnic table) and before you start climbing B#3.

Peralta Hills starts right here: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...01832&t=h&z=19

It's the trail that leads off to the west. The 2nd B is from the south and the trail leading east heads to the 3rd B.

You can hit it after climbing the 2nd B, and start heading towards B#3, you follow the road around to the left. It heads slightly uphill, still going left, turns into doubletrack (only for a second) and you'll see the new Peralta Hills sign. (It will always be El Camino to me)

Some of those folks are probably comming in from the school, at the bottom of the fireroad.

Hitting it after comming up the 2nd B is way better!
Add's a nice downhill, one short steep climb (rideable) and a longer FUN section of downhill.

Nice RR! With that amount of climbing in the heat, I have to say I'm glad I wasn't there, I would have passed out for sure!

nice RR maxwell. You have to watch out for the heat out in Oaks, it really sneaks up on you. I was out there earlier this week, and I was starting to get signs of heat stroke towards the top of B#2. Took a nice long break in the shade of the bumblebee trail sign, and all was good

What time are these magical path rides anyway? I might come along next sunday

I rode down Peralta Hills yeterday late afternoon but didnt take the same route as Darin & Pat. From their pics... I didnt want to climb up that WALL .

I rode up the first two Bs then turned left towards Peralta HIlls. I was trying to keep up w/some guy in a ShoAir jersey but he was too fast . The descent was pretty fun, a little loose in a lot of places but a new segment of the Oaks for me.
