Default Whiting Ride- can't get enough!

I am having the time of my life with my new sport. I have now been three times all at Whiting. This was a Wednesday afternoon ride. Pretty much the same route as last time, enter Borrego, up Mustard, down Cactus, through Sleepy Hallow and out Whiting ranch road.
The day before I went with a group of riders that start at Bike Co. on Bake and Trabucco and do the Whiting loop. They leave at 5 from there so I decided being a little slower I would leave from the entrance at 5 and hopefully be up Mustard by the time they met up with me.
That being said I really pushed it so they wouldn't have to wait for me. Well turns out I did it fast enough to have a good 20 min break up at the top of 4 corners. A much needed break to say the least.
Anyways the next day I get the urge to go riding again so I packed up the scion and headed down. My bud Keith met me at Whiting and we headed out. From the beginning I felt a little less fresh than I did the day before. So we made it through Borrego okay. I actually am starting to clear sand pits which is pretty cool. On the trail there is this neat little switch back up hill sand filled little deal that I tried several times but could not clear.
My approach

Not quite

Keith made it up no problem

After failing a few times my bike and i needed a break

So from that point we made it to the Y and took a break. We then began our climb up Mustard. The first time I tried this climb I probably made it up about 20% of it before I had to hop off and do a little walking. The second time i did a little better, but this ride I made it up about 50% I was pretty jacked about that! It's neat when you can have a tangible goal that you can see incremental improvements every time you chip away at it.
I finally made it up mustard and i felt it was time for some glamor shots.
Here's Keith, in my opinion his best side

and the not so good side

And me, yeah i was really really excited

And a dirty, sweaty tired shot of me

Like my title says, I can't get enough of this sport! I am having the time of my life and one of the coolest things is last night my gf and I went on a date and when she hugged me she's like 'wow you are already loosing weight"
I am already looking forward to the Sunday fully loop ride and next Tuesdays Bike Co. ride.

Oh and here's some shots from the top of 4 corners

Thanks for reading my ride report!

looks like good times! i remember my first year of riding and the initial stoke felt when cleaning climbs that used to kick my butt, then descending and forgetting all about those climbs. i think many of us got our feet wet with mt. biking at whiting and can relate to your RR, good stuff!

LOL that's what I forgot to add to the RR. After every Mustard climb I take a break at the top and then have a blast doing the downhill. It's amazing how much something can suck but also be so fun at the same time.

Way too go! I love Whiting, still trying to get through the first big beach - have all the others. The little switch - granny gear it and lean all the way forward. Next time at the 'y' turn left and do the little cattle pond loop before heading up mustard - it's a little DH reward before the long climb. Don't forget to make the left turn and do live oak on your way out further down whiting road.

BTW - did you ever think to drag your GF out with you? Some of the more 'private areas' are changed now after the fire - you never know where the 'rest' break will lead

Good stuff! 8 years ago I took a job in Foothill Ranch and a bunch of my new co-workers would ride Whiting at lunch. Needless to say I joined them one lunch and have been riding ever since. It took me a while (several months) to make it up Mustard without stopping. The key is pace, one ride I got behind someone that had a nice steady pace and I followed him all the way up. What a rush, finally making it up Mustard without stopping! Keep riding and you will get there!

Way cool. I rode Whiting for the first time last Friday and had an absolute blast on it. I did the same route as you, practically and had the most fun I've ever had on any trail.

I definitely agree about seeing the fruit of your labor.. Way to go on improving!
