Arrow RR: Holy Jim -> Trabuco

Good ride, everyone - Bret, Rob, Aldo, Lance, Lucas, Craig, Sam, Kippy, Me, and Dell. Kind of tired so I'll make this brief and get to the highlights . . .
  • Rob tore a sidewall again
  • Craig busted a Lucas and got two flats on Trabuco and also a flat on his truck
  • Dell turned back on the Holy Jim switchbacks - not feeling well
  • There was poison oak in lots of places. Will ivyBlock + tecnu + elbow pads and leg warmers on Trabuco be enough? Stay tuned.
  • Skippy, Bret, me, and Sam rode in from the front lot. An extra 4.7ish miles to the beginning and end of ride.
  • Swarm of bees at the top of Holy Jim!
Ok . . . now it's time for a nap

PO sucks...doesn't it.

I really hate that fire road....rode it too many times training for Vision Quest.

Always seems to be a swarm at the top. Wait til next weekend when all the water is up there.

Go take a nap......well deserved for that ride.

Great ride today guys. Those bees were out of control. I think they were friends with the lizard I threw in George's lap and were trying to pay me back. The Bastids chased me half the way to Trabuco! I must have looked pretty funny swatting them away.

Dell - hope you're ok bro.

Bret - you called this Toads pre-ride, don't pu$$ out on Saturday

Trabuco and my tires don't get along well. The last 3 times I've ridden that trail, I've gashed a tire.

It was a good ride, perfect weather out there today. I was feeling strong and for some reason the climbs went by quickly for me.....especially Holy Jim. Those bees were certainly annoying to say the least, but I think nobody got stung so that was a good thing. Wasn't my day again as far as tires are concerned coming down Trabuco. I put another 1/2" gash in the tread of my Nevegal in the rear about 1/3 of the way down. Put a tube in it with a Power Bar wrapper by the gash and made it almost all the way down to the fireroad then flatted again. I just walked back to the Holy Jim parking area......seemed further than I remember Thanks for the ride down the dirt road Craig......certainly wasn't your day for flat tires either Overall a good ride, the trails are in good shape aside from Main Divide getting a bit sandy/dusty.

Great ride today bubbs! Dale I hope you feel better soon big guy. Sam/DumpTruck, it was cool to meet and ride with you, you climb like a goat!!! Big shout out to Von Skip who rode the fireroad in also after riding S.A.R.T. yesterday and still joined us today. We had a couple of brief OCRIDER sitings, one in the morning, and then one when we finished up, it is always a pleasure to see him. Lucas, nice job on doing another fairly long ride with us, you are 2 for 2 on first time long rides, nice job! Holy Jim is always an ass kicker and I almost always feel like I'll never make it to the top, even though I've made it many times. Unfortunately once we hit the Main Divide at the top of HJ there were a gazillion bees flying around. I didnt even stop to rest, I tried and I had like 8 bees hovering around me, so I steadily started walking on the Main Divide and they eventually went away. The "hell climb" owned me today, last time we rode I cleaned it, but no such luck today. Our group got separated along the Main Divide, well actually Rob, Sam, Von Skip and Craigger lead the group into Trabuco, I was by myself pretty much the entire time on Main Divide and rolled into Trabuco solo. I cramped pretty bad about a 1/2 mile from the Trabuco s/t, I had to get off and walk for about 2 minutes before getting back on the Huckler. We regrouped once everyone else arrived and my legs were getting tight again so Rob and I began our descent on Trabuco. We were cruising along fine, and had a good pace going and all of a sudden I didn't here Rob behind me. I continued all the way down to the first major creek crossing and hung out and thought he would be rounding the corner any second....about 5 minutes went by and then Von Skip and Sam cruised up and told me that Rob tore a sidewall/knob and so did Craigger (2 flats). After a couple minutes of lounging by the creek we took off and finished Trabuco then rode the fireroad back out. This was actually alot of fun as we hauled ass down the fireroad passing a bunch of Bromos in there lifted Ford F950's (sarcasm) and some sedans and coupes. We chilled out at the dirt lot for awhile and then Gonzilla rolled up, took off his 8 layers of clothes only to find possible PO symptoms developing. Aldo cruised by and said the others were about 5 minutes back, then he shook. Next to arrive was Craig and Rob in Craigs truck and as he pulled up I heard a "fooooop-fooooop" noise and we noticed he had a low left rear tire, after further review he discovered he had ripped/punctured the sidewall on the inside of the tire, nice job! So after what felt like an enternity (sam/matt/me arrived to the dirt lot at 1:30) around almost 3 o'clock we headed off to Wahoo's and ate, said our goodbyes and like Gonz said, it is now naptime!!!

Good times guys!!

Talk about owned. Don't exactly know what happened, but I blew up right out of the gate today. How lame is this--I drove that effin' road in, held everyone up, portaged all the water crossings, finally got to the switchbacks, and...turned around. What a dick.

Glad you all had a great ride, despite the flats and bees.

I haven't signed up yet for the Toad Fest, but will if they're still taking apps. Hopefully I'll make a better showing next week. Jeez

Dell, sorry you weren't feeling it today man. I was surprised to hear you had turned around, something about Holy Jim doesn't agree with you I guess Anyway, you didn't hold us up at all in the beginning......your arrival time was perfect. Hope you feel better for next weekends ride

O and the best part of all - the car at the lot with the I love fullerton bumper sticker.

Nice meeting you, Sam. Holy Jim and Main Divide are always in the words of Bret, "an ass kicker."

That ride from the front lot was pretty cool - a good warmup for sure and a lot of fun blazing down it after the ride.

it was probably lucas looking for the cytomax flava's. Thanks though and it was good meeting ya. We'll have to ride again!

Anywho, yes, good ride yesterday. Not my strongest showing as I too was hurting by the time I got to trabuco. Will have to sack-up this week and get some rides in so I can enjoy toadfest.

Noticed a flat front tire when I got home....at least I didn't go flat on the ride!

Glad to hear you're O.K. I too should have considered turning-around. I got the nastiest cramps of my life 1/2 way up Main Divide. I literally couldn't walk by the time I got to Trabuco. Man, I've got to look into a better diet, stretching, less beer, whatever...

Thanks to Lance and George for hanging out with me on Main Divide.

But luckily, in the end Trabuco didn't disappoint. I dig that down hill.

Sam thanks for the info. Yeah it was me looking for the indv. packs.

Wow what a ride, first time doing that loop for me. HJ was a killer, i thought about turning around several times, especially after Dell it put that thought in my head that it would be OK, but Lance promised me killer singletrack so i had to keep going. Once we reached Main Divide i had to ditch George and his promises that the end was just around the corner. Trabuco was worth the torture and did not disapoint. Great ride allround. And NO FLATSfor me Hopefully this is a sign of things to come
