Burgers, who said burgers

Today was my first day on a mtb... ever. I bought a bike a couple of days ago and have been dieing to go ride it. My only hold up was that I have full blow strep throat and i was advised not to do anything until at least Monday.
Well, being a man with a new toy, I couldn't just let it sit there all pretty new, I needed to go see what it was all about. I called up a buddy and told him I'd be at his house in a half hour and to have his crap ready. We decided to go to Whiting Ranch for a warm up / beginner ride whatever he decided to call it. Once we arrived and get geared up he informs me to follow him and try to keep up. We entered Whiting at Burego (sp). Everything seemed to be fine and dandy for the first three minutes then the sand started. I don't know if anyones been there lately but shesh it's soft out there. This trail seemd to be a proggessive uphill with sandy washes, rocks and oh yeah sand. Once we get through that trail we come to a junction. Apparently, one side it's called "extra credit" and the other side is a gem of a hill called "mustard" My bud informs me to keep it in a low gear and just pedal. Seems easy enough, how hard could it be right? Wrong! I was all wrong about that hill. Oh btw besides being my first day on a mtb, it's also my first day with clip ins. This is a new world, one that defietly needs some more practice. Anyways we make it to the top of mustard and take a break at four corners. This was a very needed break due to the fact that I had about exausted myself on the prior trails. While up there i refiled my completely depleted 70oz camel back and managed to catch my breath. It was pretty cool also because as we were sitting there, many other mtbs came by and every single one of them said hello or at the very least gave a head nod if they were not stopping. It felt pretty good to feel so welcomed in a sport I am brand new to. So after filling up and relaxing for a bit we rode down cactus. That was SOOOO fun! Towards the end though I learned that not all berms are created equal. I was trying to carry speed through a corner and planned on using the berm to achieve me goal. Well, speed + sand berm = flying! It was fine thogh, I landed in a nice bed of ash and sand. After brushing myself off I got back on and started sleepy hollw. This trail was by far my favorite. It was a little wider and mostly downhill. We then ended up on Whiting Ranch trail and headed back to the car. All and all it was amazing! Give me a couple weeks in the saddle and i'll be at the fully tea party! Last edited by genusmtbkr5; 08-18-2008 at 03:07 AM. Reason: moved to trail talk forum |

The second lap of the Fully Loop on thursday and Sunday ride there are both GREAT rides to get seat time. They are slower paced and no one gets left behind.

Cool! Welcome to the tribe. Pretty tough to start with clip-in pedals, but as the Aussies say, "good on ya."

Yep, we've all had that first ride. For some it was decades ago, for others just recently. I think for all of us who "got the bug", our first ride when pretty much like yours. Well, maybe minus the flying lesson! Sounds like you are hooked.
Cycling, road or mountain, has allowed me to meet many new friends over the years and has been the main focus of many trips. You've got some great trails down there in OC, and a good group of people here on STR. Hope to see you along the trail |

Yep, a little "sensitivity" at first is quite normal. Ride a couple times per week and you'll be over it quickly.

Slightly saddle sore is normal. What isn't normal is when you ride so long up steep stuff sliding back and forth on your saddle that you start feeling your t'aint. Since it t'aint supposed to be there, you ain't supposed to feel it. Butt Balm is the solution to that problem on longer rides.

Steve C, Welcome to the addiction! Now if you thought Whiting was fun go ride Aliso or El Moro, none of the sandy sections that Whiting now has. And once we see a little rain in the next 4 or 5 months, try to stay away from whiting. Sand and moisture equals a lot of sand in your gears, which is bad.
Also yeah saddle sores go away. You just need to ride longer and you'll build up calluses down there.... ![]() |

can you tell me a little more about this Sunday morning fully loop? I think my butt should be ready for another ride by then. If I understand correctly everyone meets in the Fullerton courthouse parking lot and takes off from there? What time does everyone meet? |

Padded shorts will help with the soreness along with the right type of saddle. Some swear by the Specialized Toupe saddle.

Gotta love it!! Thought this would be a whine about the sand - see you're hooked even after Mustard!

well I hope my rear end is ready for Sunday. Being a big guy, 6 3" just south of 300lbs and a 42in waist line padded shorts are more of a long term goal. (fatty needs to loose some weight) anyways look for me and my black scion on Sunday!
