I have to head out of town this evening for work tomorrow so I took a long lunch and rolled down the hill to Aliso for my usual Cholla, TOTW, Meadows run and decided to mix it up a little. Mathis has always intimidates me on my SS always been a goal but never been able to muster up the drive or focus to even try it. On the way through the park I decided that since it was early and the trails were quiet this was the day...
I rolled up to the bottom and just about talked myself out of it and next thing I know I am half way up the first pitch the HRM is pinned at 190 but I am still moving so I figured that I would just try and make the top of the first climb and recover there, Well the temptation to grab onto the gate and call it a dab was great but I had come this far and suffered this much I was was not willing to give it up so I pedaled slowly to the base of the next climb bringing my HR back to around 156 and stood up and shot up again as did the Hr right back to 190 anyway this was the way that It worked for me struggliong up to just the top of the next climb and then refusing to stop and grinding forward. I know that other caqn do this without issue but for me on the SS HUGE One big Monkey off my back and one more climb in the bag ![]() ![]() It felt so damn good to finally hit the top of that hill and feel ocean breezeHAve a great weekend riding and I may run into you on Sunday somewhere out there ![]() Thanks for listening J

I've done several times it on my old Salsa 26" single speed running a 34 X 20.. it was tough but very doable. I've since done it on the 29er SS running a 34 X 22... which runs out to about the same gear inches but it seemed much harder. When that 29" wheel slows down, it takes so much more energy to get it moving again. In order to do it, I had to slow down and recover on the flater spots like you... great job to get that monkey off your back!

My experience on clearing Mathis on the SS is very similar to yours....by the hair of my...well...
Anyway, it's been a long time since I tried Mathis so your story has inspired me to give it a go very soon. Congrats! D

Good work on slaying the monkey... did you eat its brains? (^_^);
But seriously, we all have "THAT HILL" we want to conquer and its nice to hear about people that succeed. For me, it's Penitent Hill, AKA the fireroad at Pinetos that leads to Viper/Placienta Canyon.

Nice Jeff, I just did Mathis to Cholla on Wed on my SS. 34:19 but a 26er. The 34:18 I had before really worked my knees. Good job on conquering Mathis. Meadows will seem easier now for you. I think Mathis is tougher on an SS.

Impressive. I managed the top half in my middle chain ring today and was pretty pleased. Still had to use the little chainring on the bottom portion. I can't imagine the bottom on a SS. Awesome.

Nice work, that's always a tough one. Here's my ranking of Aliso/Woods climbs by difficulty to clean with no dabs or stopping on a SS (hardest is no. 1 and ranked down from there)
1. Canyon Acres (can it be done?) 2. lynx 3. Meadows 4. Mathis 5. Rock-it 6. Cholla |
