Stoled? I think not, Dead heads stand united. I'm presuming Trojan is a fellow Dead head. I actually just finished watching a Grateful Dead live at Alpine Valley DVD(1989) while enjoying a few pale ales. Ok, maybe more than a few.

Hey Kanga, how many ft did we climb? (or accend-decend?)

Again I have to give kudos to the rest of the gang. None had done SP in that direction, none had done the technical Colby Canyon descent, and Tom and Dakota had never ridden the San Gabriels before. Tom told me it was Dakota's sixth ride ever! He trudged along, didn't complain, and probably didn't know what he was getting into. But he and everyone did really well considering the heat, distance, and time on the trail.

And Joe, what's up with the WTH on the smoothie?

The rest of the group climbed just under 3000' and descended about 6650'. I set "laps" for each section of trail on the GPS so it was easy to figure out.

Forgot to mention that Silkworm did the ride on a hardtail! Colby is a little more technical and rougher than the merrils for those who don't know it. We used to ride full rigids up there back in the day, but I have no need to reminisce or go retro. I like my full squish Bionicon, and wouldn't even think of a hard tail on that trail!

I'm in Mammoth this weekend, but the following weekend I could be talked into doing this or another similar route again.

what other trail(s) would offer the same or more mileage and fun factor?

What?!?!?! I went to the second to last show at Alpine that year. It was my first show ever! Granted, I didn't know what the hell was going on or fully appreciate the experience since I was only 14, but what a great time it was!

I'm up for doing a San Gabes ride this Saturday .......let me know if you're interested.

Hard to beat colby and the gab for fun factor, but we could do this route: Four Favorite San Gab Trails in One Day

Everything we did, plus Chilao loop.

Everything and then some. May be more than I could handle right now. What's the mileage on that? 30-40?

Saw my first Dead show at age 12, And what a long strange trip it's been.

There could be something in the works for Saturday. I'm game and open to suggestions. Kangas ride suggestion is tempting and scary.

That ride (the link) sounds amazing, how many miles is that?

Do we ride our bikes to redbox after the 1st portion of the ride or do we drive after the chlilao portion?

I rode from Chilao to Redbox on the ACH, as I was shorter on time than I'd anticipated, but I wanted to do Silver Moc to the Gab to Strawberry Peak and the Gab.

With the road portion and strawberry peak it should be about 38 miles without Vetter. If you include Vetter, about 3 miles more. There are other options too.... Silver Moc to Big Tujunga to the Strawberry Peak trail, and climb it from the bottom up to the Colby Trail. It's a long steep single track climb, that's better done in the fall or winter.

Kanga, have you been able to leave from Josephine, up and over to Colby, then up Alder Creek to the Punisher? A guesstimate on miles and vertical? And maybe from there down Silver Moc, Short Cut, then back to the Ranger Station for Josephine? Doable in a day and how many miles?

I'd kind of like to train enough to be able to do that ride in a day. 35 maybe 40 miles? 7 or 8000 vertical, with support?
