Default Irvine Open Space (rabbit run...)

Fun day out on the trails today. Open access day today at the Irvine Open space was the place to be. Cool weather with a bit of mist made for great riding conditions. Ran into quite a few STR folk out there as well. With a 7:45 start, Bobzrag, Turtle, our friend Ola and I took off up the Shady Canyon bike trail for a warm up before heading up Quail Hill. Here we found a snake daring us to take action!

go ahead...take it....TAKE IT!!!

We went down Cattle Crest which was fun. Got a few photos from the camera phone, but not great quality.

Rabbit Run was fun and only the 2nd time going down. Both Bvader and Bob rolled one of the bigger rocks near the bottom;

Bob

We all did well and had a great time. Ola did fall coming down Shady Oaks, but she made Team Crash proud wearing her jersey and blood with pride

Continued up Shady Oaks to Ridge line and hit the elephant rock

almost ran into Ola rolling the rock here (went a bit off line )

14 miles total and eveyone wanted to go back. Can't wait till the next open space day.

We even had a Queen and RacinJason sighting at the end where Ola and Queen compared cankles! Even had a forty two sighting fresh off breaking an hour at Blackstar!! Also rode with Edog (Ian for a bit). Quite a few STR people...didn't talk to all of them...had enough break time..had to ride! Good seeing you all out there!

Finished our ride with beer/pizza at Steelhead Brewery at the UCI marketplace...not a bad way to end the day!

I think I ran into you guys a few times. I was on the green Van Dessel. I was there when Ola was posing for that picture. And then we caught up to you guys again at that elephant rock.

I rode in on Shady Canyon as well, but I didn't see any snakes or $100 bills though.

Great weather though. Overcast with a bit of moisture to help keep the dust down.

It was really nice conditions out there.

I managed all of Rabbit Run except the "knarly drop" or "90 degree steep turn". There are three lines off that obstacle. The "90 degree steep turn" is the least intimidating but still too hard for me, there is a very steep roll line and a 4ft drop line. All 3 lines were too much for me.

I saw a glimpse of a coyote just before the junction of Serrano and Rabbit Run. There is a nice wilderness feel to this area.

I said "Hi" to many people on the trail, I think Ola parked next to me.

I really had a fun day.

We rode up East Fork to start the day (on recommendation of the guy at the check in table)...wow that was hard, not the best way to to start. Then rode the ridge over to Rabbit Run where we met up xhuskr and Crew.

Rabbit Run is Fun! There I said it. It was funny on the way down I was thinking "There is supposed to be a big drop/roll I should take a look at it first" next thing I know...I am rollin it, rolled it a bit fast, its smooth but you have to kinda turn a bit. I didn't and met the bush on the right side. But I went back up and did it again.

The shady Oaks single track is one fine trail. I really liked the climb up and the descent on the other side, nice little rock features, flow etc. That will be a busy bi-directional trail.

We then road all the way around to the ridge to Quail Trail and made a big loop. For the final kicker we climed up Ridge Route and then turned around and came down. Including the "Elephant Rock" which was a good roll. Ridge route is another great bi-directional trial

Overall very fun day ~18 miles 3K climbing, I will definitely go back.

Thanks grant for posting the ride and reminding me.

After getting our snot rockets and phlegm balls out of our system, Jason and I managed to crank out 6 whole miles! It was nice running into so many friends too! We were only there about 1.5 hours, but managed to see Kevin, Steve, Weyland, Ted & Adrian, Pat, Maxwell, and Adam. Didn't see you out there Grant, but you were probably busy climbing, descending, then climbing again just for fun cause I know you like to do that

There are some fun trails there. I'd like to go again whenever there's another open access day, provided Jason nor I are sick!

Hey, we saw you out there --- I even complimented Ola's "Team Crash" jersey! Next time I'll identify my STR self! Great day to ride, and we did a great ride up and down at least four different singletracks there, plus the lung-burning uphill right after the sign-in table. We also saw the poor rattlesnake, but at the end of our ride. It looked like it had been dead a while.
