Smile I love my local hikers !

I decided to post this after seeing so much talk recently around conflicts with other interest groups.

I was riding my local spot today, a place where nearly every time I ride I cross paths with hikers and sometimes equestrians. Just dropped onto a very steep 100 yd scab of a singletrack, one that puts me on my head about 10% of attempts. I cleaned it and rode out to the fire road at the bottom, at which point I heard a huge collection of howling and yelping from the hill above. It startled me as I thought I was going to encounter the largest pack of coyotes I'd ever seen up here, and I've seen a lot. I looked up toward the noise to spot a collection of 8 or 10 women hikers, hands clapping and howling - actually cheering for me and the success of the descent.

I caught up to them and we laughed about my thought of them as coyotes. They iterated the cheer and I thanked them for the fan fare.

Not writing this to toot my own horn. This is a result of at least two decades of multiple use in this area along with consideration by all sides. The trails started as equestrian, then we MTB'ers enhanced, added to, and help maintain the routes. I've never had a bad experience while crossing paths in more than 20 years on the trails.

It is possible to all get along....respect and be respected !

I hear responses like that from women all the time, but it's when I take off my jersey.

Great job on cleaning a decent and also being a good steward of our MTB community. It is very possible to have a great ride and also be considerate to other trail users.

good to hear, I have good experiances most the time as well with hikers and horses, but it seems every so often, even with a smile and friendly greeting, they pre-judge just because i'm on a bike.

Default Old Friends!

Speaking of hikers, with the opening of Whiting I got to see some old friends on the trail. Anyone that has ridden Whiting in the early evening has run across this group, 4 to 8 Asians that are hiking. The nicest group of people you could meet. They told me that they have been hiking there every day for the last 10, 11 years. Good to see them again.

I work in Foothill Ranch and during the last several months I would occasionally see them hiking the streets. I'm sure that they are glad Whiting is back open.

At my age any attention is well taken.

Wow, they're still at it. I started working in Foothill in the late ninetees, just down the street from the trailhead and used to see them out all the time.

I would be out there several times per week riding or trail running and yeah, they were real friendly - and moved at a good clip.

I would always wonder at how no matter the weather, they would be in long sleeves and hats - guess they knew something I didn't.

That's the key to long life right there, staying off the couch
