Default I'm Super Bummed!!!!

So I'm sittin here checkin out the pic's from the bbq/ride at snow summit and I notice there seem to be a fair share of long travel/downhill bikes. I'm bummed because the ONLY reason I didn't go is because I have a downhill bike and as far as I understood those aren't allowed up the lifts!!!! Why didn't anyone tell me? lol looks like you guys had a blast. I'm going for sure next time!

Nice meeting and riding with you yesterday, Chris. You made things look easy and all on a xc oriented hardtail. Good skills fer sure! Nice little blunder which almost landed you in little pond post log jump with a horrible trany area.

BTW, your statement below might be true but at the risk of bursting your bubble, I've never heard of "Dirt Torpeedo" until I met you and you announced yourself. I'll be sure to react as such the next time though.

Default Lost and Found...

Someone left a long sleeve DH style "Fly Racing" jersey @ the BBQ. I've included a couple of pics to help jar your memory. For Pete's sake, please PM me and arrange to get it out of my house, ASAP! It smells horribly and I'm tempted to throw it away, if not claimed very soon!

Also found was a 12-pack of Pacifico beer @ the BBQ. This one you can't claim. It was gone shortly after being discovered.

Default Good Times!

It's safe to say that this STR Big Bear BBQ was a success... in fact, that's an understatement!

After arriving Friday night and checking-in at our hotel, I gave Dean a call and met up with the group (Neil & Traci, Dean, Craig, CC, Mike, Jesse, Dell, Willie, Pamela, and others) at the local brewery. We all adjourned to the Pine Knot campsite and sat around the campfire talking and having a good time.

The next morning it was time to hit the lift and get riding. On my first lift up, I sat with Lee (2wheel_lee) and Ko, and they were gracious enough to let me follow them down the mountain. This was my first time at Snow Summit, and it's kind of confusing with trails running every which way and all of them unmarked (aside from numbers... so a map is not much help).
I think our route was Pirates to Lower Falline. Whatever it was called, it was FUN! Lee got a pinch-flat at the bottom, and suggested I catch the group who passed us, which I did. This group consisted of HappyGilmore, StinkyRider, DavidB, Pato (i think), Freekengo, and others. StinkyRider knows the area well and was a great guide. The next run was down Upper Falline to No.3... WOW! This was great... rocky and loose (by turns), and some steep sections. I crashed once -washed out my front tire on a loose turn- and cut my arm. Thanks to the guys who helped patch me up (Pato? and?).

By luch time, i'd gotten three runs in. The BBQ was a blast... we all sat around eating/drinking, talkin story, and just having a good time. A few of us were in a hurry to get back on the trails, so we (Neil, Chris, and I) headed back up. When we got to the lift, we were informed that they were closing it due to thunder/lightning, but allowed our group to go up. Neil led our next run with Shu, Hanzo, JoeTruth, Chris, I, and a few others. Neil's an animal -especially on his 48lb Flatline- and led us down a route which was mostly a controlled slide... steep and very loose thru trees. There were crashes galore (me included). Chris went down hard too, and when we got to the re-group, his comment was "F*** you, Neil!!!"

After another pit stop at the park, we headed-up again for a couple more runs. Our last one was truly memorable and included Neil, me, Shu, CC, Willie, Dean, Chris, Pamela, and a few others. It's hard to remember who I rode with on each run: there were STR folk all over the place, and many i'd never met before. Anyway, it began raining as we were heading up the lift. The nice thing about the rain was that it eliminated most of the dust and really improved traction. After a smokin' ride down the S/T, the Sasquatch sighting, bombing the fire road, flats (Chris and Willie), and another fast S/T (lower FL, I think), we got to the bottom where the rain became a downpour. We were all soaked, but what a blast!

Thanks Traci & Neil for making this possible, Lorabee for coming up (and puting up) with me, Snow Summit for the discount lift tix, and all the STR folk who I got to ride/socialize with. For me personally, this was the most fun i've ever had at an STR event.
I only took a few photos, but here they are:

1) Ko (Lee's g/f)
2) Lee... while riding, I only ever saw his back (getting smaller and smaller). The guy's really fast and has great bike handling skills!
3) Chair lift to paradise
4) Scenery

Oh damn, i heard about the crash of the log jump while i was hanging with my group watching some guys launch of it. I heard that right after he crashed (face planted) he said "im not gonna ride for 3 weeks". That jump looked way tuffer than the pic.

Thanks Neil and tracy for all the hard work. Good riding, good people and good food.

P.S. the most memorable part was riding down summit at 4:30pm when a thunderstorm broke and we got soaked all the way down of a sweet singletrack.

The weather was great, although the rain could have come a day earlier. There were a few cracks of thunder and rain on the way down but couldn't have asked for more really.

It was great turn out, I believe they said 61 tickets were give out for the discount lift tickets. I was able to se many old faces and some new faces.

There were some casualties nothing serious or at least that I know. Overall it was great to ride with people I have rode with many times and some I have never rode with.

I only ended up taking two runs, first run was down with a group including way to many people to even remember all of them. About half way down ran into another STR group with many familiar faces. Followed them down the next section, had a couple close calls and one slow OTB that I was able to roll out and only end up with a small scratch from a branch the even ripped the jersey. Then back up for another run, then we had to sit while the lift opperators had to yell at someone (who I will not name) that decided to go down a trail thats not allowed, passing a "sign" thats said you couldn't ride there, but not sure where this sign was. Finally to the top a large group went east again but a small group (Jessie, Steve-autoduel, socalrider77 sorry blanking on name and the other name to and myself) decided to go west and see what there was and head to the park for lunch. So we rode fire road down. Someone got a flat(Jessie) but at least he finally has stuff with him. Hear the best quote of the day from a lady with her family "It looked a lot more fun on paper" refering to the trails. Then we hit another group of STR riders getting ready for a jump. Well Steve decides to hit it.

Lands a little short but makes it. Decides to try again with more speed
Looking good,

uh oh

Well he goes down hard and we all just freeze, not one moves finally we check on him. He was ok except his shoulder really hurt. But he continues on like a trooper.

We come across a single track and decide to finally try it

After a fun top section it got hairy fast. Huge log drops to sketchy landng in rocks and super fine dirt. A log ride that goes uphill and many other "Oh Sh*t" spots. Needless to say there was lots of walking. Finally get to the bottom, after another minor crash. The amount of food was insane, so many people brought food and drinks. Ate hung out then plan to go back up, then Tracy gets a call that lifts are closed for an hour due to lightning. So we sit around more and eat, and eat.

By the time it was time to ride I was just kinda over it and since I was riding with Steve back the OC I didn't want to leave him sitting there all afternoon. So we head back get poured on dodge lots of rock on the road(and hit a few).

Overall it was a great time, and a great turnout. Hope this isn't the last one.

Dillon, Casey and myself had a f'ing great time!!!
We got to the picnic area late but still hooked up with Boats and Mommie Mayhem. A few wrong turns later and we were on the lifts. We did the "Grandview Loop" to warm up (some pics to load later). Rode the lifts again and hit "Fall Line" (Upper and Lower) then off to the BBQ. Nice to see many old faces and a bunch of new bubs! After brats, beer and waiting for the lifts to re-open we were off again! This time we went down "Pirates of the Carribean" and "Lower Fall Line". Gave a tube to 2Wheel Lee (get some Stan's) and Dillon borrowed some eye protection from...?...(gray Elsworth and yummy carne asada ---I'm soooo bad with names). Send me a PM and we can hook-up.
At that point it was close to 5. Dean, Neil, CC, Willie and the rest went for another up and me and the two boys headed back to the BBQ. Gave Traci a big "Thank You" hug said "Howzit" to Andy, Sam and Toby? at the grill with some tasty chicken kabobs.
We packed up the truck and headed out. The skies opened up at that point and made for an interesting drive through town to the dam. Lots of rocks and boulders on the hiway before Snow Valley, but not a drop of rain after Running Springs!

Again:
Traci and Neil--Thanx for the set up.
Nice to see bunches of buds.
Nice to meet bunches of new bubs.
and nice to ride with everybody!!!
