Yep that is the one I use on all my bikes. Volunteer for Corba Trail work and ask Hans for one...free... Cow or bear bells are for Santa Cruz bikes drowns out the pivits creaking. Dean

yep. "on your left/right" is just about useless. you pretty much have to assume that people won't go where you want them to go. so you just need to slow down and say hi. a little goodwill can go a long way.
and i'm going to dig out my old mickey mouse bell out of the garage... |

I have used Bear Bells and they are not as effective as a bike specific bell.. Bear Bells hikers stop and look around to see what it is. With a bike bell most of the time they step aside without looking back because they know it is a bike. In El Moro years back I shook my handlebars with bear bell on it to get some hikers attention. They were in their typical formation of 4 across taking up the whole fireroad. They all stopped, looked at me then froze in their tracks. Then another biker comes down the hill way to fast and has to stuff his bike into the ditch to avoid hitting them. Moral is bike bells work best. Dean

I started a loop by riding into LCWP from Dartmoor Street in Laguna early this AM. Almost immediatley I got to witness some guy on an MTB nearly take out a group of six hikers that were heading up Boat Canyon towards Bommer. This guy was coming down the fire road WAY too fast and he went into an uncontrolled skid as he came up on the three abreast hikers. Then, to add insult to injury, he has the audacity to start berating them for not getting out of his way and impeding his flow.
When I politely asked him to please be more careful and yield the trail, he tells me to F.O. and to mind my own business. Unbelievable

Take off eh!

I have seen a lot of close calls. It wouldn't hurt if everyone stopped using I pods on the trail. Too many riders, runners, and hikers that seem to be oblivious to their surroundings. Let's keep it safe out there.

recently rode with ken dog (above) and his new bell worked great!!
unfortunately we rode with someone (can't actually remember his name) who was kind of a trail a-hole and a general a-hole and didn't take kindly to my constructive criticism regarding his trail etiquette. I'm pretty sure that he's a roadie 90% of the time, so it wasn't surprising... |

Ditto Bill. "On yer left" is racer talk and, if you consider how it came about, an aggressive statement anyway. Still, it's ingrained in some of us or, in my case, I really only get to pass and humilate pedestrians anyway... so I use a variation: "Howdy, I'm coming around on your left, okay?" The key being, I explain where I'm going rather than leave the hiker to figure out what I mean.
Bad bad deal with the gal that got laid out by some douche. Good on you riders for helping her out, as we'd expect you to.
