Default RR: Lewis Morris SP, NJ

Hey- took a trip down to my girlfriends parents house in Northern NJ over the weekend. I lucked out, and found a great trail 10 minutes from thier house.

Very fast, flowey singletrack, without a rock in site (which is a big change from the perpetual rock gardens here in Boston). Dirt was sticky like glue, making the return downhill very cool. Pefect for SSing:

Little log roll, I rocked it:

The ride:

Good times!

Where was it? I may end up moving there next year and I need to be close to a riding area.

Hey! The place is in Morriss Plains, which is Northern NJ, about 40 minutes from NYC.

As for finding a spot to live near riding, well.... your in luck! It appears as if there's tons of riding all over NJ (it is the Garden state!). Check out www.mtbnj.com, its the local STR.

They have a cool breakdown of trails by Northern/Central/Southern with maps of each trail. Very cool, let me know if/when you move, we'll do some riding. I'm down there all the time.

Did someone say "Diablo"?

Nice... this weekend I was back east and drove from JFK to Hartford and back, through small town Connecticut on the way up. Couldn't stop thinking about all of the good riding I was passing by. Everything was so green and such a nice tree canopy.

Used to live in NJ and rode Lewis Morris dozens of times (if not more). Its quick and fun and you even have a lake to cool off at if you go there during the summer. LM is near Morristown which is also a nice town and gives you great post ride meal and beer options.

Best place to ride in NJ, in my opinion is Ringwood State Park. Miles and miles of carriage roads (East Coast version of fire roads) and tons of twisty singletrack.

You may also want to try out Blue Mountain Reservation in Westchester County across the Hudson, about an hour's drive from Northern NJ.

They hold a series of races in all of these places called the Hudson 2 Highlands series (norba sanctioned local race series). If you just race the 8 or 9 races in the series you'll get to visit all of the good riding place.

The website is:

www.h2hrace.com

Through their you can link to trail maps and the local websites of the shops or groups that manage the venues and parks.

Good info! H2H had a race at LM recently I think. I looked at Ringwood, but it looked like mostly fireroad at first glance. Now, I know to check it out next time .

Try the "Graveyard Singletrack" at Ringwood. Its rocky and tough with some serious switchbacks. Also, the blue trail on the southern side of the park is pretty good. You can download a good trail map of Ringwood at the website of the Ramapo Valley Cycling Club, which is the local MTB club that maintains the park. Their website is www.rvccmtb.com .

Mild? If the furnace works.

I spent a winter in a summer house at White Meadow Lake and a summer at a winterized house in Morristown.
