When is a flag no longer "a fitting emblem of display"? That's all a matter of opinion. Personally, I feel a new flag on top of the Luge is a wonderful symbol that reflects a rebirth of the glorious STT/Luge/Old Camp.

Thanks to the Warrior Society for all the ongoing hard work on the trails. I wish I could pitch in and help.

You can by becoming an official FS volunteer. This work and patrols are not exclusive to the WS. Jim J. and Randy W. are not WS members but are FS volunteers. You can apply with the FS and join us. Lots of work still needs to be done. Here is the info:

  • Trailhead monitors - check signs, area, materials, registration forms
  • Trail inventory hikers - assist FS staff with trail assessments and inventories
  • Land Steward/Restoration - help with restoration projects and removal of non-native species restoration program
  • Develop and lead interpretive programs - Santa Ana Mountains Natural History Association
  • Develop a forest Junior Ranger program
  • Staff the Visitor Center at El Cariso (Ortega Highway)
  • Adopt-A-Trail or ongoing project
  • Wildomar OHV (Off Highway Vehicle) Area - needs help with trail maintenance, fencing, habitat restoration, signage and patrolling
  • Forest Ride-Along program - assist staff in recreation areas and on patrols
  • Miscellaneous projects include fence repair, habitat restoration, graffiti removal and maintenance

Excellent info Gene! With summer upon us, my weekends will be a bit more available. I'll definitely be looking into offering my assistance. Thanks again.

Thanks you all so much for helping to get that trail back in use, can't wait until it is open again. I miss our night rides out there.

You guys really should invest in a Bob Trailer, we use them all the time doing trail work in the San Gabs. They even make a accessory to haul tools.

Thanks Steppie. I've been looking at getting one and putting it to good use...and I'm not talking just for trailwork.

thanks for the trailwork and report. i think that old flag had lots of character and has withstood the elements and represented perseverence, it might have been cool to leave it up there.

anyhow, i will be there if i can when a large trailwork day is scheduled!!!

Call me a sentimental old man... but I still get choked up when I see pictures of the flag. The number of good men and women that have put their lives on the line and paid the ultimate price is represented in old glory. Politics aside, there are people dying right this minute on the other side of the world... they are representing that flag and what it stands for ... yeah, I still get all choked up.

Thanks guys... job well done

first of all, thanks for the hard work on the trails. but what's the history of a flag on that trail. it always seemed a little out of place to me. is there anybody "officially" responsible for it or have the warriors just taken over as stewards.

btw- not trying to start anything (i was in the air force for 4 years). just curious.

Much appreciated work Gene, John and the others. And, it is so timely with 4th of July around the corner
Can't wait for this area to reopen and we'll be able to see with our own eyes all of your hard work and effort!

Thank you again!

I'll see you right after the Vintage ride; have an obligation in the morning.

Thanks for the hard work guys! it looks like you guys moved a lot of dirt- any chance of getting small equipment up there to help i.e. bobcat?

I'd be up for chipping in for any equipment or tools you guys may need to rent to speed this process along- for selfish reasons of course

once again, thanks!

I'm not sure who started flying the flag there. I'd like to think it's there to honor our troops overseas.

Reportedly the old flag burned in the fires last fall and a new one was flown by the Mountain Bike Mafia after the fires were put out.

The Warriors Society is not officially in charge of the flag by any means. I think alot of folks would have done the same except the area is closed. We were just up there doing trail work and decided to retire the old faded and tattered flag.
