Jared had Go Pro cameras on the front and rear of his bike for the whole ride who knows if it worked well. I would be interested in seeing how it turned out.

I was directly behind him when he stacked, and it was one of the most spectacular dismounts I've ever seen.

Its that time again...
|
A bunch of us were down the hill and across the big stream and we heard the crash from there. We were concerned, first the kinda quiet lull and then we started to hear everyone chuckling, we figured whoever it was, was OK.

First I want to thank everyone who showed up a participated, there was such a vibe of camaraderie and teamwork that I feel privileged to have spent the day with two dozen of the highest quality individuals on the planet, Thank you all.
I was glad to see that I was not the only last minute decision maker; luckily I hitched a ride with Kish to conserve gas and the prospect of a dull trip. Our fears proved unfounded as we rolled out a little past seven, it’s amazing to watch the layers of smog that linger in natural depressions and valleys on the way up. Once in Angelus Oaks the diner staff was friendly and helpful and it quickly became apparent the turnout up ahead would be the designated parking. We ran into Jason and brewmasters’ group and started partnering up for shuttles, taking up the cars with racks to send up the drivers later. Our arraignments were in place and we were itching to heat up the trail before it did the same to us. Since the majority of the field had no idea where we were, it seemed wise to wait for the group leaders, all told I think two out of 26 knew our destination. Sure enough a roving tribe of warriors appeared with guidance, OMR obliging the role of sweeper, and a dude in a hat with a bag of stuff that he said you had to try to believe. After passing it around, we were all feeling fired up and ready to ride. With no map to guide our start we simply rolled en masse in a likely direction. After stopping to confirm we were entering a closed area, we knew there must be a trail that connected and simply blasted through a mess of logs and pine cones before some warp speed blacktop. It may have been the mysterious bag of powder but all of the sudden we were rolling on a magic ribbon of single track; Weaving its sinuous path under the canopy and along outcroppings that in a word flowed. Quite a few switchbacks and stream crossings later we stopped to refuel and look back in awe upon one of the most incredible rides anywhere. Sure there are lots of fun diversions locally but this here is honest to goodness Alpine Mountain Biking. Scenic vistas and clean air were not the only benefit, while flatlanders sweltered it remained below 80 degrees or so at the 7k foot level. The way out was a reasonably grueling fire road, somewhat reminiscent of Mustard or ITT. After stopping to make sure my favorite parts were still happy I heard a rustling coming up the road behind me. It was not the second wind I had hoped for but a specter that seems to haunt every foray of mine into the woods. A cordial “Mr. Disco” issued from Calvin as he whooshed by on a single speed going fast enough uphill to pass trucks that were also climbing out of the valley. Panting I did return his courtesy but failed to notice any shortness of breath or a beaded brow as he vanished on the horizon. Experience has taught me not to try and pace that one, so I indulged in the most inviting convenient water fall I have had the courtesy to stumble upon. Once back at the Parking Area I ran into another old acquaintance the cause of and solution to most of life problems Alcohol. We watched Search and Rescue performing basket maneuvers in the vicinity of San Gorgonio. A quick jaunt on the 215 led us to the designated pool/meeting place and it became apparent that more beer would be needed to wash down the Pizza. Some miscommunication as to our pick-up location turned out to be a benefit since we could hit Bev-Mo instead of getting some tall cans from the liquor store. I feel in debt to have had the privilege of experiencing a new trail with such competent and able companions. No one got lost, left behind, or locked up so happy trails to all and hope to see you at the next one. |
