RR: Kaibab Monstercross

Truly amazing. I've done 1, 100 mile mountain bike ride and that's enough for me. I read of your exploits and I'm in awe. I wish some of these folks could comprehend the level of pain and strength it takes to do a ride like this.

Final cool detail/story: The Kokopelli Trail Race is basically the original unsupported endurance race. Mike Curiak and some friends started racing each other on the 142 mile trail from Moab to Fruita under the basic rule of no outside support. The race grew and grew until it was attracting a fairly large crowd full of talented athletes. I believe the biggest year was somewhere around 60 people.

Unfortunately the KTR has trickled off the past few years due to conflicts with the BLM.....but the spirit of the event is alive and well in lots of new unsupported endurance events that are popping up all over the country. The courses/distances vary quite a bit....but the basic rules/attitude are the same: no outside support, be responsible for yourself.

Anyways.....long story short.....the Dewey Bridge is a major landmark on the Kokopelli Trail. A few months ago a child playing with matches burnt the Dewey Bridge to the ground. The bridge itself was a historical landmark that was originally built in the early 1900's(if I remember correctly).

Where do you suppose the burnt pieces of said bridge wound up?

They're on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place Kaibab Monstercross tropies:-) Dave and Meredith were in Moab shortly after the fire and gathered up some of the metal pieces that remained of the bridge. They took them home and turned them into trophies with wood and some old chainrings. They look really cool......and they'll always hold a bit of history for me.

Anywho.......you should all go check out tourdivide.org. Local girl Mary Collier is out there.....giving it all she's got. I'm rooting for her in a big way. Go Mary!

Lynda had the kids....she stayed in camp and hung out with them. I think she rode a fair amount of the course on Sunday after most of us had gone home.

I believe this was the third time Calvin has been on a geared bike in the past few years:-)

Great RR and pics B. Mad props to you, Dave, Calvin and the others. Calvin does break out the geary once in a while and for someone with his abilities, he is a very humble guy. So since he finished 3rd, did he go running afterwards like he usually does after an event?

are you kidding? i knew a guy that took a shot of barry bond's whiz and did the vision quest on a beach cruiser (he said it tasted kinda like bud light).

Can you explain your head gear? Does the shade make up for the lack of ventilation? What were the temperatures? (notice full-fingered gloves)

It's basically a regular bandana folded in half with a shock cord sewn down the middle. It sits on the outside of my helmet and hangs off the back mullet/cape style. The shock cord sits nicely in the front vent and keeps it in place.

I don't really notice the lack of ventilation......I just really like having my neck/ears covered. I dislike wearing sunscreen so this is what I do instead when it gets really hot/long.

Temps were likely in the low-mid 90's by mid-afternoon. Hot enough for me!

I wear full finger gloves all year......creature of habit in that regard.

I also use the bandana as a filter when getting water out of streams/lakes/etc. The shock cord wraps around the mouth of the bladder and keep the bandana in place while filling. Drop in a few tablets and you're ready to rock with a nice wet bandana on your neck:-)
