I'm a FUN-GI!

Default 12 Hours of Temecula

Hey Gang!

Well, I figure I'm online so I may as well start!

This was a very fun event at a very cool venue. It was also my first 12-hour. I was registered Solo Clyde, but in the last week I ended up filling in for a missing rider on Team High Gear (4 person team). I was VERY glad I did this!!! It was pretty hot - not Traverse hot, but still, hot enough to make you suffer!

The course was something like ~11.3 mi, with about ~1500 ft of climbing (I'm guesstimating as it's not posted on GeoLadders yet!). Pretty good variety of terrain. A few short, moderately technical downhill singletrack sections - but overall, not a very technical course. The soft sand in many places, however, added a technical element to many sections of the course!

Our team was in 4th place out of 15 (4-person team category) when I left...we were ~30 minutes ahead of the 5th place team, but a full lap behind the 3rd place team.

My lack of training over the last month was apparent, netting me a pair of ~1:12:00 laps.

On Lap 1, my legs just fizzled out as soon as I hit the "Dam Climb", which is near the start of the lap...you reach this at roughly ~7 mins into the lap. My legs felt like concrete and my heart rate skyrocketed out of control, at one point reaching the 200bpm mark. I peaked the climb around ~25 mins, off my expected pace. Got passed by 2 riders.

After the climb, there is a little more rolling fire road followed by a good deal of semi-technical downhill singletrack. This is where I tend to do best, and I ended up passing ~5 riders before the end of the lap. I also cleaned all of the short/steep climbs and hike-a-bikes. But it wasn't enough to make up for my snail's pace up the hill.

My 2nd lap felt MUCH stronger than the first, and I was quite perplexed how I could have felt so much stronger and faster yet netted the same elapsed time. My legs felt better, my heart rate was much more under control, and I climbed in higher gears. I also made a number of passes on the second half of the course and cleaned all the H-A-B's again. But again, it didn't make up for my less than stellar climbing.

The fastest lap of the day was somewhere around :47 mins (not mine! Pro rider I think), last I heard. This could have been beat, but I doubt it.

We had a nice, shady area in the grass to stage out of, and it was great! Need to remember to bring the family and dog next time, as there was plenty of room for all sorts of outdoor activities to keep the fam occupied.

Pics will follow, as they are mainly on a team mate's camera. See you guys out there in November!

Thumbs up

That sounds like a great event. While I was in town doing things for fathers day the temp hit 100 at 2pm so I knew it was hot at the lake. I hope you will ride in our Race for Babies June 2nd. It is sure to be a great event to help The March Of Dimes. Congrats on the 47 min lap that is real fast.

Sean,
Your team might of cut off a few minutes per lap by taking the kickstand off of the bike in the 1st picture (J/K)

How was breathing through the broken nose?

And I am sure that our "The Machine" also would have played better defense in the closing moments of Game 3 ... even after tearing up the course.

guess I am still a bit peeved at the Lakers...

Can't wait to read the reports!

Default More photos...

I came a little late and brought much needed ice to the melting group from Adreneline.... I was able to catch some moments between laps and some good emotion. It was a beautiful venue...and a nice day for those of us under the tents.... I stood on the hill for a few minutes and got a glimpse of the intense heat they experienced out on the course....that was enough for me!!

Cool down was either a cold shower or a freezing towel...

and then back out they go....

It's a nice roll through grass...then a swampy sand pit...to a steep little climb that Neil made look easy even with no momentum.

and off they go...

The return was a washed out singletrack that many missed and ended up in the bushes...so the coordinators were out trying to repair the trail.

...looks like a success!

I don't know how she was smiling at this point!! Good job!!

For Neil....coming in from a lap just meant more ...

For Troy and Steve it meant rest and success for their first endurance race!!

Good job everyone.... and I'm sure the overall's will be posted soon!!!

It was hot from 9 till 4pm. 3 laps I did in the first 4 hours or so really took a toll. Was ready to quit then. I originally wanted 6. But could only ground out two more for 5 total. Cleared Marine Core a few times and didn't lay the bike down all day despite the powder and chunk out there. Felt good about that. And was still climbing most of the hills my last lap. Small victories. Anyhow, despite all the positive encouragement from Traci and Nam. Thanks guys, but dam, I just didn't want it anymore to go out at 7pm for #6. Like I said, if I did I probably would have come back and put all my bikes up for sale in the marketplace.

Steve, Troy, Jason, and Greg. Nice seeing you guys. All you guys did awesome out there. Much tougher day than January's race for sure. Neil, you're a monster. Way to throw down and crush you way into 2nd. Mario and Luke, thanks for kind words as you guys went whizzing by. Willie, man Willie, good job. It was hot under all that hair huh?

Weyland, good job man. Way to go out and put up a strong 6, 2nd place Beg. solo. Definitely avenged how you got screwed out of a medal in January.

Allison is a machine. I'll let her tell her story, but she basically biked fast laps all day.

Nam, Traci, Kelly, Mike (Shud) thanks for running a great pit and making sure we were pampered when came in from those hot laps. Post ride BBQ and beers were awesome. Thanks for that too. Good times. Diamond Dave, thanks for keep my bike running smooth all day too man.

Duke777, man I'm still going to hook you up for something for fetching my clothing bag that I forgot. Riding in Dickies shorts Sat would have sucked. Huge thanks dude. But we're still going to call you 1.5 (as in 1 and 1/2 laps) for breaking the rear derailleur that demo from Intense on your first lap and taking the quad ride back to the finish instead of skateboarding it in! When you going to open the Chinese owned Taco Truck? Your tacos Sat were delicious.

Jason and his crew did a great job organizing the race. Course was well marked with plenty of sweepers and enough aid stations. Most people I've seen yet so I hope this event continues to grow. Dam, I should have made use of the pool though.

Here's a few pics.

Duke777 Calling out his # laps. Almost dude, 1.5!

Dubjay after his 6th.

Okay, happier now with Will who was with team 2nd to last.

Good job Troy. 3rd place beg. solo finisher.

What's TKblazer doing?!?.

Greg finishing.

Allison with Mechmann after her monster day.

Groupshot. I think 1x1Clyde was still ripping lap #7

Beg. Solo podium.
